Prolonged bleeding after coil removal

mynewusername · 22/05/2014 09:51

Hello everyone, NC for privacy but first time using the Health section!

I had my coil (Mirena) removed just about six weeks ago. My first proper period in five years began last Tuesday, and it is showing absolutely no signs yet of slowing down. The flow is medium, not heavy, but there has been no hint of a change for ten days now: isn't this a bit long to be bleeding for?

It is difficult to get to my doctor... but of course if I am advised to see her by those in the know on here, I will make the necessary arrangements!

I have just turned 50 btw, two children aged 17 and 15

Thanks for any advice!

Never mind everyone. I'll go to my doctor.

I must admit that I am disappointed. I have been happily giving moral support, practical advice and free specialist info on MM (another board) for four years now. This is my very first request for something back.

Sad how it works

I think the health boards are generally quieter so can take longer to get replies especially if it's something others haven't experienced themselves. Smile

I'm having my mirena out soon so I can't say how long is 'normal' yet. I did bleed on and off pretty much constantly for 3mths when it went in though. Can you ask to speak to a doctor on the phone if you can't get an appointment? At least they can give you an idea of what's normal.

mynewusername - not been on for a few days so haven't seen your thread until now.

I had my coil removed last October and had at least 10 days of pretty heavy bleeding and clots. My case slightly more unusual a) because i had lots of fibroids so periods were always hell so not unusual to expect a lot of 'clearing out' b) I ended up in a&e/em surgery as I ended up having an arterial bleed from one of the Fibroids after about 10 days and nearly died.

HOWEVER - that was obv unusual. But the 'normal' level bleeding had not shown any signs of stopping at the stage it all went a bit mental….ie pouring out of me !

So i would go to your doctor for a cheek or gynae if you have one - i wonder if at 50 it may be pre/menopausal related.

Would you have another one put in? ( I hated it generally which was why i had it removed in the first place)

thekingfisher · 30/05/2014 14:47

btw you nay want to try reposting under family planning section more traffic particularly mirena related !

unobtanium · 30/05/2014 16:49

Oh thanks! Ebb and kingfisher... Faith renewed.

Horrible experience kingfisher. I have fibroids too so maybe that's what's going on?

To ans your qn, I will definitely get another put in, as I had some pretty catastrophic periods prior to that -- by the sounds of what you're saying, related to fibroids possibly?

I loved having no periods. And I also imagine that when menopause comes the coil will suppress symptoms... might be nice?

Anyway thanks for replies and I will get me to the doctors. Bleeding is tailing off today of course.

If you liked it, it is worth having another one - you can have oestrogen patches or gel with it if you have any meno symptoms, without the progesterone part (as it is in the mirena).

BigBirdFlies · 30/05/2014 17:18

I had very heavy bleeding after mirena removal, and my second period was very heavy too. My third period was just heavy Hmm

But the periods only went on for a week. IME removal of mirena does mess up hormones. But for 17 days of bleeding I would ask a GP, unless it stops today.

I think I have fibroids too. Thekingfisher, your experience sounds horrific, I'm glad you are ok now.

Does anyone know what treatments are good to control your periods if you don't want mirena?
I want to know what options are viable for when I visit my GP. My mum had a hysterectomy at my age, but I would prefer to avoid surgery, although I don't want and can't have more children.

thekingfisher · 31/05/2014 10:33

Big Bird - I actually had a hysterectomy in the end last November as I was so worried the arterial bleed would happen again - although it was all unexplained - I had em surgery to 'block' the arteries to the womb which in theory should have stopped any further dramas of that magnitude, but i just couldn't face putting myself, ds and dh through all that again ( we were out of UK on holiday so was very very stressful for DH trying to deal with it)

I decided that as we weren't going to have any more children and my periods had been an omnipresent force in my life for so long featuring reliably on holiday, parties, special events that I should just get rid of the whole lot.

Its funny i don't 'miss' them per se its just an absence which is quite pleasant - left my ovaries however so still get PMT Grin

thekingfisher · 31/05/2014 10:35

You should also take a look through old threads there are surgical alternatives to help control your periods esp if they are related to fibroids - but as i found out none of them are particularly pleasant or reliable to resolve the situation beyond the short to medium term.
Its what compelled me to push ahead with the hyster. I'm 40 btw so relatively 'young' these days to have one...

newusername I'd have answered your post had I have seen it.

I had horrendous bleeding after my Mirena was taken out. It started 2 days after, and didn't stop for 16 weeks. I was on max doses of Norethisterone to slow it down and had to go into hospital for a transfusion. In the end I had an endometrial ablation.

Hope you've got some answers from your GP.
