What are the positive eventualities if you find a lump in your breast?

Basically I was just wondering if there are many insignificant reasons, cyst, inflamed nodes ect. I have found a small lump and am a bit concerned but don't want to jump to the worst conclusion iyswim. I am going to the doctors on Monday.

does it hurt? i think ive read that if it hurts it is less likely to be serious and is probably just a cyst. thats what my one turned out to be

Carmenere · 31/08/2006 12:29

No doesn't hurt and is quite small.

most likely to be a fibroadenoma (sp?).

90% of breast lumps are entirely harmless, carmenere so please, please don't worry. That's impossible, I know, but it really is likely to be nothing serious.

xx

hmm i dont have any experience of one like that im afraid as my one was v painful. i got told as it was a cyst it would prob just break up over time

Orlando · 31/08/2006 12:33

I had a fibroadenoma and it was completely painless. Had to have it removed before they could tell me that it was harmless, but that is certainly the most likely outcome.

fuzzywuzzy · 31/08/2006 12:33

My friend had a painless lump, it was just a lump, they offered to remove it but it wasn't anytihg scary so she decided not to have surgery to remove it. This was a few years ago and the lump is but a memory.

Have gone to your GP?? Just to put your mind at rest. Friend did have to have a is called a biopsy where they take a sample from the lump and send ti off for tests.

My Mum has had a number of small lumps in her breasts over the years. She had 3 removed back in the 80s - all at the same time - and analysed
All of them were benign cysts. Apparently lots of people are just prone to them and they are not a precursor to anything sinister. Also none of hers hurt so just because yours doesn't, doesn't necessarily mean it is something bad.

Good you are going to the doctors to be on the safe side, but try not to worry too much it is probably fine

Carmenere · 31/08/2006 12:44

I've an appointment for first thing on Monday morning. Thanks for the advice everyone, I know that it is unlikely to be anything too serious but can't help worrying a little bit. I am going away for the weekend and shall try to forget about it as there is not much I can do anyway.

there are a number of possibilities, but basically 9/10 breast lumps are benign. if you get referred to a breast clinic they may do an aspiration to take a few cells to look at, which is a little uncomfortable but they should explain what they're doing all the way through.

here's a link to a Radio 4 phone in on benign breast lumps

Carmenere · 31/08/2006 12:57

Great link bundle thankyou

it's one of mine

I had lump on breast few years ago when i was 26. Had fine needle biopsy and ultrasound and it was a "roaming mouse cyst" or fibroadenoma, in other words completely harmless! Have still got it but thinking about getting it removed. It did not however interfere with Bf dd, even thought around nipple.
I just find it uncomfortable to feel it, so want it removed eventually. Be sure to get checked out ASAP. Good luck

Orlando · 04/09/2006 11:44

How did it go at the doctors this morning Carmenere?

Carmenere · 07/09/2006 18:59

Well ladies, I'm 99.9 per cent fine thank God
It's a cyst, I had a needle biopsy, a mamogram(ouch!) and ultrasound this morning. I am the proud owner of two lumps, one a cyst and one a lump of hard fat, lovely!!!However all is fine which is a huge relief as although, logically, I knew I was very low risk, emotionally you can't help wondering and I did have the occasional meltdown over the past week.
I just want to say thanks to you all and to anyone who suspects they have a dodgy lump - go to the gp tommorow!

glad you're ok. I had a fibroidaenoma removed when I was 21, just have a feint scar, and no painful lumpy boob anymore. I was a day patient, had a district nurse visit for a few days to change and remove my drain, and was up and about and back to work within a week. Very common
