More expensive amalgam filling??

I saw a new dentist last week and was advised I needed to replace a very old filling that had cracked in my lower molar. I am NHS and was advised I could have a bog standard NHS filling for the usual band price, or a 'better amalgam filling', for 25 more or pay extra for the white. I was so confused I booked myself for the mid priced amalgam filling. Any idea why this would be better than a normal NHS one?? I have never heard of this!

She also told me about mouthguards and so on to think about for my teeth grinding, I can't work out if this is a good service or if I am being 'upsold' but to what advantage. I am very nervous and not assertive at the dentist.

Any thoughts or advice greatfully received... Thank you.

It might be a boned amalgam, stuck in with special cement that makes it stronger.

Boned = bonded Blush
