Ouch! Sudden Jaw Pain really hurts!

I was eating a sandwich, bit down, not that hard, felt a crack/pop and my jaw felt out of line, and I could not open, or close my jaw. The pain was excruciating for about 5 mins, into my ear, through my face up to my eye, into my neckthen I could slowly open it a tiny bit, but couldn't bite down/close my jaw. It subsided enough for me to get on with eating my sandwich gently after about 10 mins, leaving a dull ache, sore to touch.

Then it happened again this evening, and now I can clench my mouth together, have a horrible headache, my eye is twitching a little, ear hurts, mouth hurts inside toward the back of my throat, the whole of that area really hurts, and it hurts to touch in the local area of where it cracked.

What the fuck is that all about?

I do find that I clench my jaw on occasion without realising it, due to being in pain for other unconnected reasons, when I am in pain, or concentrating, I find myself clenching my jaw, mostly when my pain is high. Is this the likely cause?

Thanks teacup and 2kids I only got diagnosed with shingles last Thursday and the GP said it would clear in a week. As I said I had no pain at all and the blisters were tiny and not painful. I still have the rash but it's fading, and just this niggle of pain which seems to have subsided tonight. I will definitely see the GP if the "niggle" continues or if it gets worse.

I know someone who had TM and it was life changing (she was a work colleague) and no treatment seemed to work. She had to leave her job and her marriage broke up I heard, but lost touch. Just hope she got some relief.

Pavlov you seem very brave about your problem and even manage very happy faces (!) I hope you get sorted soon.

I've never really had to face bad pain - I think gall bladder pain was the worst and that didn't last long. I'm not very brave about pain.

I had the same thing a few days ago. Try pressing really hard (in and up) just under your cheekbone on the side that hurts, and then sit for a while with your mouth hanging open and relaxed. If it feels better, keep doing it! Definitely helped me.

Sorry I know this is an old thread and you probably won’t even see this but I’ve had upper jaw pain for two days - I’ve just followed your advice and the pain instantly went away! So thank you!
