Why have I developed allergies to fruit/nuts?

I have never been allergic to fruit/vegetables until the past year.
I now cannot eat apples, sugar snap peas, kiwis or hazlenuts.

I am 40 years old and cannot understand how I now experience intense itching in my throat if i eat these items.

what happened??

Nobody can tell you. Looking for a reason will probably drive you batty so best not to try. Sorry you've had to face this.

its called OAS oral allergy syndrome. its quite common among people with high allergy ratings to tree pollen, and food allergies.
There is a wide range of response, some have just problems eating certain foods like apples during spring. Others have all year round problems. Some can eat for instance cooked apples but not raw, but some react to one cell that is not heat treated/cooked . These people tend to avoid those fruit and veg.

My son has all environmental allergies , some food allergies he has OAS to some fruit as well.

Allergies can happen at any age in life, so its perfectly possible that you have some food allergies now.

go to the allergy section of this board.

look up the AllergyUK web site and Anaphylaxis campaign.

go to your gp and ask for a referral to an allergy clinic or for blood allergy tests called RAST.

good luck.

Thanks eragon, I looked on the allergy website and it made perfect sense.
I do have allergies already from childhood, they have got better as I've got older ( apart from horses and cats)

The oral allergy syndrome is definitely what I've got.

It's why I always have antihistamine tablets with me.

It doesn't seem to be constant - sometimes tomatoes are fine, other times they make my mouth tingly. It's more likely to happen when I'm already reacting to things, i.e. at the height of the hayfever season, or if I've just been round cats. Cooked stuff is usually fine. I just take things easy, and only take a bit of things I'm likely to react to, until I can tell whether it's a reactive or non-reactive time. (I am absolutely refusing to give up things like cherries forever. They're too scrummy.)
