BUPA healthcare. Is it worth it?

Dh has started a new job last month and as part of the package there is BUPA heathcare option.
Has anyone got any experience of this - whether it is worth signing up to? We will pay a little extra tax and there is a list of exclusions (things like maternity, ongoing conditions, sports injuries etc). I can't quite picture what we would use it for that would really benefit us.
Any experiences or advice would be helpful.

Absolutely worth it as you have no idea what illnesses / injuries you may have to deal with in the future.

I've used mine for various things - knee cartilage surgery, ERPC surgery after a miscarriage, investigations for TMJ issues, physio etc.

My husband had knee issues as the same time as me, I got referred, scan and operation within a week. He waited 11 months for his op.

We have it but only really because of serious illness like cancer. I tried to get my colposcopy done privately after an abnormal smear (was trying to conceive and worried the nhs appt would take ages to come through). It took them so long processing the various bits of "evidence" they requested that by the time it had been approved I had already had it done on nhs.

Having said that dh has used it for physio (where there are terrible nhs wait times) and received hospital benefit when he stayed in as an nhs patient after an accident.

Thank you - I think it might be worth signing for after all.

DH and I both have BUPA via our respective work policies. We had always been very fit so not expecting any future problems. Since we joined:
DH has used it for a shoulder injury, hernia and finger problem - surgery plus physio. He could choose when to have the operations to fit in with work/home.
I was diagnosed with cancer and have been able to use local private hospital for chemo as well as scans and consultations with the consultant (who is the head of the breast care unit at our local teaching/world famous research hospital) If I had gone NHS I wouldn't have seen him every time. One of the consultants I have seen said that although the outcome was the same as NHS it was like travelling business class rather than economy. I've been prescribed drugs/had procedures that wouldn't have been immediately available on the NHS.
For us it has been worth the loss of part of our personal allowances.

Yes, yes, yes, soooo worth it for the little bit you pay.

DH and i had it through my job and it was fab. You book yourself in for ops like booking a hotel Shock. I had tonsils out and lumpectomy, DH had a knee op.

You can get daft things done too like skin tag removals and varicous veins that you can't get on the NHS these days.

It's a good perk when you come to need/want it.

We have it through my work, and dh and I have had our moneys worth out of it.

Theonlyoneiknow · 15/05/2014 23:31

I get it through work although pay the extra tax. Have used it loads, breast clinic appts for ultrasounds and mammograms (get seen very quickly normally), physio, osteo.

If you are getting it through work it's a no brained IMO

yy - for me it has been worth every penny, I have had a colonoscopy and prolapse surgery, i also had ds undescended testicle fixed at the portland through it....it gives me a lot of comfort knowing that if i have something seriously wrong with me, or a dc, that i can see an experienced consultant, at a time that suits me (after work, or on a saturday) within a matter of days, to get a proper diagnosis, then if i need treatment, it will be done by the same consultant, probably in a week or two, in a well equipped and comfortable hospital, with nurses who have time to actually, nurse

I would definitely go for it sooner rather than later. If I remember rightly I sent the forms back to BUPA. Unfortunately I left mine and then hurt my back so it's not covered. They were very good when I had my gallbladder removed - I had the operation 12 days after going to A & E.
