Knee pain

For the last few years I've been getting pain in one of my knees. I have no idea why it started but walking (with double buggy) longer than 20 mins seems to start the pain later that evening.

I went to the doctors a few months ago and they couldnt find anything wrong but told me to take ibuprofen.

A few weeks ago I banged my knee and couldn't walk for nearly 2 days. Took 2 weeks tp get back to normal.

I want to start exercising but after doing an exercise DVD today, and now being in agony, I know I can't. I was stupid to even try it, I know.

Should I go back to the GP even though they couldn't find anything wrong with it?

No redness or swelling, I'm a healthy weight and I'm 23.

When you say they couldn't find anything wrong, did they actually do any investigations? If it's sore again now go back and ask for an X-ray at least. If that's ok and the pain persists ask for an MRI.

I've got a very dodgy knee amongst other things and do find a firm Velcro knee support helps.

Well the doctor just felt it and bent it ect. I think I'll ring for another appointment tomorrow. Thanks for the knee support tip too. I hadn't even thought about using anything like that before.

I have a dodgy knee at the moment, it's the articular cartilage plus some swelling in the bone. They only finally figured out exactly what it was after an x ray, ultrasound and MRI. The knee is pretty complicated! You can't tell for sure what's wrong without tests.

I've never had any redness or swelling btw, just pain and couldn't walk on it for a while at first.

Definitely go back and push them for an ultrasound or MRI.
Ibuprofen is the best thing to take for it.
Whatever is wrong with it, the best thing to do is rest it.

Ah dreaming, that sounds painful! Are they able to do anything for your knee now they know what it is?

I won't let the GP just send me away this time. I do try to rest it as much as I can, but with a crawling baby and a toddler it's hard. I just feel bad for them as we don't go out much because of my knee.

Also, I breastfeed so I don't like taking ibuprofen too often.

I'm having physio but will probably need surgery (hoping to avoid it). That's why it's so important to rest as much as possible, you don't want it to get so bad that you need surgery. I know it's hard with kids though, I have a toddler myself. Try not to feel bad about not taking them out, it's for the best in the long run!

Doctor waved my leg in different directions and diagnosed wear and tear arthritis. No x ray ,MRI etc.

Matildathecat · 18/05/2014 22:13

Excellent news, Row, your GP has X-ray vision. Grin

I had an ACL rupture aged 14 and they thought it was all kinds of things until they did a "look see" and counted 1, 2, 3, hang on? anyway at the time also saw a gp who was NO help. rest is good but not so much it stiffens up- keep icing with a bag of ppeas too- they'll mold round the joint, just dont eat them afterwarsd, keep marked bag just for this purpose. if u r worried about taking the ibuprofen check with the doc- i bf-ed and took diclofenac which is same family but stronger, think it's not an issue when they r born, but check with the doc. do any exercise you can to keep the quads and glutes strong- tensing bum or thigh muscles while sitting with your legs up is good

ask for a physio referral. My physio took five mins and diagnosed the problem (patella tracking issue). They are clever people.

don't know if this is you, of course, but don't let it be ignored.
