Snuffly 9 week old

My 9 week old son seems to have a cold - he's sneezing, has difficulty swallowing and is quite snuffly. He's been a bit scratchy all afternoon, but is asleep now. Should I give him some Calpol when he wakes up for his next feed? I don't want to over-react, but I don't want him to be in too much discomfort, either. Every time he sounds as if he's choking, I have a little panic attack. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to say my dd had it at 8 weeks as well. I was shocked as thought they wouldn't get colds this early. I spoke to my doctor and he said he 9 times out of 10 has moms on the phone regarding this. I also spoke to him about the chest as that was my main worry. He said that if they are grey and lethargic and have a temp then you should take them to see the doctor. Thankfully dd didn't have anything like that, she just had a very blocked noise. I ended up putting boiled water in the room to help her breathing and also took her into the bathroom when i had a shower which also helped. Oh and i put her mattress on a very slight slant, it also helped the breathing.

Hope that helps x

And just remembered another thing (sorry memory is awful at the moment ) The doctor also said to get saline drops from the pharmacy, these helped clear the mucus out.

IMHO I wouldn't give calpol. It is not suitable for babies under 3 months except for post immunisation fever (my dr was quite explicit about this). Won't treat a 'cold' anyway only the fever which may be associated with it. Dr questioned the efficacy of saline drops too.
I put some vicks vaporub on a tissue close (but not too close) to baby to help keep the nose clear. Raising the head of his cot or crib by an inch or two will help his breathing (put towels on one end of crib stand under the basket depending on the style - or under the mattress but make sure they are flat & level).
