Have any of you used the Mirena to combat perimenopausal flooding?

And if so, how did it work out?

My GP practice is quite keen on pushing the Mirena on anyone of potentially childbearing age not currently TTC, but I've steered clear because I'm concerned about possible side-effects and how ready doctors reputedly are (or aren't) to remove it in the first year or two if you do start getting side effects.

But I'm getting hacked off with (what I'm assuming is) perimenopausal flooding and beginning to suspect I need to do SOMETHING hormonal to tackle it.

So I'm interested in any experiences from MNers who've been in a similar situation and started the Mirena at a similar point. Did it help? Did the much-vaunted lack of periods materialise even when facing off against flooding?

Obviously will discuss with GP before making any decision (and to confirm that this is a perimenopausal thing) but would like to hear some real world experiences first.

I had awful flooding/clots and was anaemic,
Had the mirena fitted, and now have NO periods Smile
Admittedly it took a year to get to this stage, the first 6 months I had spotting every day, but gradually it settled down, be patient and good luck

Upside - periods pretty much disappeared and I had really really really heavy bleeding. I was lucky - it didn't take long to settle - less than a month.
Downside - very sensitive boobs for a couple of days every month (no big deal) and spots (bigger deal - not acne style or anything but just a constant few spot) - sigh

Yes was brilliant for me had a Haemoglobin of 5, struggled on for ages but mirina was a lifesaver, and saved me from a hysterectomy, have had a few mirenas over the years Took a month or two to settle but then period free wonderful.

Yes, but it didn't work, just made periods last for 15+ days. I peresevered with it, periods got much worse not better, ditto tranexamic acid.

Then I got a referral to a gynae, and had a hysteroscopy. The Mireba got removed at that point and periods returned to 7 days, but still ultra heavy. Think Niagara Falls. The hysteroscopy showed a very large fibroid sitting in my uterus. It was removed under GA, and my periods are now 3 days long. First day quite heavy but manageable, 2nd day medium flow, 3rd day much lighter. It's great.

The Mirena seems to work for lots of people, but made things worse for me. Worth a try though.

Yes.
Best thing I ever dd.
I had a lot of spotting for about the first 2 months and wondered if it would ever end.
But now 5 years on, I haven't had a period for years.
My acne went that I had suffered from for years and I lost 2 stones (proving that you can lose weight with a mirena).
