Tips for being stuck at home - practically forever!! - with a broken leg?

I broke my left leg 10 days ago - right through the skin, blood everywhere, 2.5 hours of surgery to repair it, only got out of hospital today. At least 4 days out of it on morphine, it was such a nasty break my consultant was bringing in his friends for a wee look!

So now I'm home, no weight bearing, got a zimmer, living downstairs for at least 5 weeks (luckily we've a very comfy sofa bed!). MIL has stayed, has been a star, filled the freezer with meals, cleaned like crazy, shopped, looked after dc after school.

My 3 problems are - (1) is it ok to ask my dc to help more than usual? They're 10,12,14. I don't want them to be "carers" but there's no way I can do housework (I do have a cleaner!). So washings, dishes, sticking stuff in the oven - that's ok isn't it. Dh will do lots but he works long hours and is away overnight roughly once a week.
(2) dealing with a cast practically. I can't shower as it's upstairs. Got to be careful about getting the cast wet. Otherwise dh would be hosing me down in the garden. Hair washing? Is the kitchen sink a bit eww for this, because that's easiest!
(3) the sheer mind crushing boredom! I usually work 2 days and I also volunteer, and that's all impossible right now. I'm not a huge tv watcher, I like crafty stuff, knitting, sewing etc. I like reading. But frankly, 5 days a week from 8-4 on my own will drive me nuts. I've put out a fb call for visitors!

I've never had a broken bone before. It hurts!!

And as for outpatient's appointments at the hospital! Car-park half a mile away down a steep hill with uneven paving slabs on the walkways, Reception desk down two corridors from the fracture clinic, then X-ray dept upstairs, too few chairs to sit on, and all had fixed arms so I couldn't raise my leg on the one next to mine and so forth.

Oh God, I'd forgotten all this!

Our fracture clinic had rows of chairs facing each other. Great fun when you and lots of others have to stick your lgs out in front of you and people have to climb over you to get to the seats.

Went back to the fracture clinic today to have my leg checked. I didn't need an x-ray, but they took off the back slab plaster, took out my stitches (62!!) and re plastered in a lightweight cast. It was nice to see that neither of my wounds had got infected.

I've been letter writing, reading, watching documentaries and am knitting a Griffindor scarf for my dd1. Ordered the wool to do a Little Hug blanket today.

I've got people coming to visit and my cleaner, the OT and physio have been in, so I'm not all by myself. It's nicer than I thought to have some time to myself!

Glad it's going o.k weegie my dh once broke his arm and really enjoyed the 9 weeks off work once the pain was under control. Take it easy and hope you heal up well.

Please make sure you are having injections or tablets to prevent DVT.
I hope you get the pain under control and that everyone pitches in to help.

That's a lot of stitches! Do you have a regular hair dresser you go to as it may be possible to ask them to come and do a home visit every now and then?

Thermos or lidded cup. Second the idea of a shoulder bag or backpack to have things to hand in- alternatively could you knit a little bag to hang off the Zimmer for phone, remote, tissues etc?

Slow cooker!! Essential. YY to pp saying leave door on latch. I had a note on door explaining (for postman, window cleaner etc!) so they either left stuff with neighbour or knew to wait for me to get to door.

I found a daily newspaper a big help. I felt in touch with the world & the puzzles occupied time. (Local newspaper good for light reading) Any chance you could have a paper delivered for next few weeks?

(Sorry not had a broken limb but DS was attached baby and I couldn't leave my chair for hours still can't he's asleep on me now , 15 months on and just had a grandparent on crutches.)

Hope your recovery continues quickly!
