Omeprazole capsules

Hi. Has anyone else been prescribed omeprazole capsules for the baby? We've been given 10mg carousels and told to use 3mg. So dissolve in water and use 1/3 of the mixture to syringe into his mouth. Great. Only problem is : THE BUGGERS DONT DISSOLVE! Opened up the capsule and there is teeny little beads inside and will the heck as like dissolve on cold or got water. Any advice? I'm actually considering counting 1/3 of the beads out and just stringing them into his mouth with some water. He's 13 weeks...

Jeez seriously? Surely it cannot possibly be appropriate to split in this way!

You will need to do a search but I came across a thread on here a while back that said omeprazole liquid was extremely expensive which was why doctors usually tried to get you on infant gaviscon first as it is so much cheaper. (but crap)

Hopefully someone in the know will be along soon, but personally, I would not be keen on splitting medicine myself for a baby and certainly not messing around with capsules which specifically say do not split (I have omeprazole for myself following severe heartburn and reflux during my pregnancy, it worked a dream on me)

Good luck Thanks

Hi thanks. We've had the gaviscon for ages and haven't got anywhere with it. I'm happy to split as the gp and pharmacist didn't have a problem plus I'd rather him have a smaller dose if he doesn't need the full 10mg. Maybe if I leave them dissolving overnight LOL

I'm a children's nurse and I know they don't bloody dissolve!

The liquid costs about £100 per bottle (I can't remember the exact amount), which is why you get the tablets.

My DS has reflux too and was briefly on omeprazole but is now on ranitidine.

The only other thing I can think of is to put the beads with a little water and syringe them into his mouth in the hope that he swallows some ? Likely story for 13 weeks old?

You need the mups which are dissolvable tablets. Need to go back to your doctor. (Am a dispensary manager)

Don't try anything with the capsules as the dose won't be accurate

Yes it's the MUPS. They disobeyed and can be given accurately.
