What is going on with DS (TMI)?

He woke up Thursday night with vomiting/diarrhoea. No subsequent vomiting but more diarrhoea than I've ever come across, but only really in the mornings (so we're talking 7+ episodes pre-midday Fri, Sat and Sunday, then it settles down a bit). In the evenings he's been having horrendous wind/stomach gurgles.

None of the rest of us are remotely affected, which is making me think it's not a Norovirus type thing - although not food poisoning either, I don't think. And he's relatively OK in himself - I'm making sure he's not dehydrated - and he's quite cheery. He's eating - not much, but something.

He's 15 and has recently been diagnosed as anaemic, if that's relevant (is on iron, but has been for a couple of months so I don't think the iron's the problem).

At what point do I see a GP? And any armchair diagnosis would be very welcome.

Have they found a cause for the anaemia? It is generally a symptom not a diagnosis in itself - I would agree with PP that crohns/coeliac should be ruled out.

I haven't a clue and others have said things that could be helpful but am posting just to say he hasn't been anywhere you haven't has he only because a friend mentioned a swimming pool that had been in their local paper recently because of illness caused by pool chlorination being too much before spotted in time caused some kind of illness amongst several users. I wouldn't hesitate in contacting GP only because sounds like you could do with reassurance/help. Good he is cheery though.

Thanks for replies - no diagnosis for the anaemia yet though there is a family history of Coeliac so that had crossed our minds. I don't know if the blood tests that picked up the anaemia would have checked for that already, though - must call GP and will mention cambylobacter.

Added complication is that GCSEs start next week - he could really do without this.

I recall something similar myself 6 months ago, cured (it would appear) by a strict gluten free and lactose free diet. Tests for coeliac have been negative, but have stopped short of endoscopes, there doesn't seem much point when It seems my digestion is very happy with the current arrangements.

I used to drink a LOT of milk, but realised after going gluten free that I could link the evening bloating, burping and farting episodes with the milk consumption, and they stopped when I stopped the milk. what a relief.

there is a lot to be said for feeling able to leave the house in the morning without risking getting caught short any more. Hope you get him sorted.
