Bit of background suffered from endometriosis, ovarian cysts, severe pain, irregular bleeding some of which is unexplained, adhesions for the last 12 years. Can I elect to have a hysterectomy and what is the minimum age I could try for it?

If you really really push, accept all the risks and refuse everything else you can have a hysterectomy but they won't remove your ovaries (usually under the age of 40-45) because it will put you into an instant menopause and although you can have add-back HRT, it will increase your lifetime risk of some cancers, heart disease and osteoporosis. With your ovaries still in place you are likely to still suffer from your endometriosis and obviously still the cysts. Have you tried a mirena coil and if this doesn't suit have they given you a 6month trial of GnRH analogues such as zoladex or prostap?

I had one at 35 for repeat cervical smear problems. I'd had DC's and after another iffy smear we decided to just take it all out and stop any future problems. Still got my ovaries so my hormones are still ticking over.

I suspect it's better to do it when you're young, if you've had your dc's, than leave it 'til older when recovery would be harder. I was off paracetamol by day 5, bed rest for a week on here all the time then off work for another 10. But a much easier recovery than after my EMCS.

Have you tried endometrial ablation?

I've had similar symptoms apart from cysts. I saw the gynae and was hoping he'd say I could have a hysterectomy. He advised to try an ablation first. Its worked wonders for me.

He said with a hysterectomy even if my ovaries were left there was a good chance I'd go through the menopause within 5 years. As I was in my early 30s it was something I wanted to avoid.

I was on zoladex at 19 with hrt advised I could never have children so im very lucky to have my 2ds's. Ive been on that many different painkillers and medications I can barely remember half of them. Forgot to add I had abnormal smear and biopsy results. Ive tried various forms of combined pill till I was advised oestrogen feeds the endometriosis, depo which was fine for tge first 2 yeatsthen had to come off it when I went back on it I had problems. Nexplanon which was fine until I had a laporoscopy. Currently on a different pop and had a lot of pain so much so its radiating down my leg and up my arm but doctor wont refer until I go back this week if its still bad. It feels never ending I cant remember what its like to feel normal.
