6 week old baby, no poo for a couple of days, how long to leave it?

DS2 is 6 weeks old and has been a real good nappy filler up to thursday, then nothing since. He's breastfed. He had an op a couple of weeks ago on his small intestine, he had pyloric stenosis.
Is this just coincidence, or could it be connected?

I am a bit paranoid now because of the trouble we've just had, it's probably nothing, but how long should he go without pooing before I see someone about it?

ds2 has somtimes gone 2 days and he was bf

mrsdarcy · 26/08/2006 22:37

At this age my DD would do one poo a week

coppertop · 27/08/2006 08:27

Dd used to poo several times a day until she was 6 weeks old. Since then it's been about once a week on average. (She's 5mths old now)

DD did exactly the same. We left it a couple of weeks - health visitor and GP all said she was constipated/colic but I knew it wasn't that. DD screamed constantly, especially at weekends, but not really at classic colic times. In the end a friend suggested a chiropractor and it turned out her Vegas nerve was trapped - this controls all the major organs and also their motility. Apparently this is quite common in standard delivery babies. We never looked back after that.

My 9wk old has recently started going 48hrs before doing one, having previously gone every day. Apparently breastfed babies can happily go a week without one- as lonh as they're feeding and weeing, it's not an issue.

Normally I'd recommend squirting a bit of watered-down orange juice in his mouth, maybe during a waaaaaaaaaaaail, but perhaps not for one with recent tummy issues. Hope he sorts himself out soon.

My ds poo'd every day at least once a day. My dd poo'd every 5 or so days. Both were breastfed. Nothing was abnormal with either. I saved lots of money and time with dd. Enjoy it and hope it lasts. I was told that exclusively bf babies can't get constipated.

I think only you know whether DS seems happy and comfortable or not. Otherwise feel free to seek advice if it will give you peace of mind. Am sure they can go up to a week with no worries if breast fed so try not to worry.

as others have said - if your ds2 is showing no signs of discomfort then i would leave it for now - bf babies espeically when they are growing alot as yours will be, can use up all the bmilk because it is the best thing for them ie there is no waste - poo. as long as he's having plenty of wet nappies and shows no sign of discomfort, and is feeding well, he should be fine. however, if you are still worried do pop along to your hv/gp. just be wary of their advice, they quite often advise on bottle fed babies instead! do you have a bf advisor who can help?

angelaj1 · 28/08/2006 21:18

hello my baby did the same at 3 weeks old so i called the midwife who said anything up to 7 days is normal - he was just saving it all up to make the next nappy change a treat......

Thanks for all the replies! I have only just had chance to check the thread.

Typically, DS2 had a poo on sunday morning!!

But it is reassuring to know it's not a problem if it happens again.
