One of my teeth has cracked and is beyond saving. I am terrified of the dentist at the best of times! Does it hurt? What do they do?

I don't think it does no. Had 8 reomved cos of over crowding when i was little.

They inject your gums (thats hurts a bit) and then you mouth goes numb and they pull it out.

Aero · 26/08/2006 19:38

No pain at all CD - you'll be fine and that's coming from a fairly nervous patient. You may well feel a slight pulling sensation, but they will have numbed you up well and it's not at all painful.

Can sympathise CD.I am very dental phobic but after several months of having pain I plucked up the courage to visit my new NHS dentist and have a wisdom tooth out.My dentist was a lovely kind lady and put me at ease. She gave me a local anaesthetic, then a top up as I could still feel some sensation when she prodded my gum! Then hey presto tooth out in about 5 mins,no pain.Still no pain when anaesthetic wore off.(Couldnt drink anything hot alcoholic or smoke after for 24 hours.)

CD one of mine cracked and a huge chunk of tooth fell out.Lovely grey filling and one side of the tooth is all that is left.Very attractive when I guffaw with my mouth open .The dentist said the tooth is dead but instead of pulling it out he's going to fill it up with white filling.Do you definately know it needs pulling?
I have had teeth pulled before and no it doesn't hurt.

CountessDracula · 29/08/2006 16:08

ow ow ow

it hurts!

Didn't hurt a bit when they were doing it but since the local wore off it has been agony

Am pumped full of painkillers!

I've had two molars removed - and bridges - and I'm sorry but it hurt like hell afterwards.

CountessDracula · 29/08/2006 16:14

yes this was the last molar at the back on the top

when does it stop hurting expat?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 29/08/2006 16:20

That's a big tooth!

It took a couple of days for it to stop. The last one was root canalled years ago, but an infection got in under the crown - my gums receded during pregnancy on the side of my mouth I can't see. So there wasn't even that much tooth there and it hurt!

Aero · 29/08/2006 19:22

Cd - poor you. I honestly had no pain having it done and to me the relief was immense, so can't recall any pain afterwards, but keep taking the painkillers and I'm sure it'll settle in a couple of days. I attended a wedding the day after having a wisdom tooth out!

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 19:23

you'll be fine think of the tooth fairy

flack · 29/08/2006 19:25

I had one pulled out (infected wisdom tooth) and it didn't hurt at all. Was a blessed relief, so quick and easy. I could marry that dentist (if I fancied women).

poppiesinaline · 29/08/2006 19:44

I had a wisdom tooth out under local and it was fine. I too, was absolutely bricking it, but the dentist was fab and it didnt hurt at all.

I am sure it will go fine Countess. Make sure you give us all an update when it is done.

jollyfolly · 29/08/2006 19:49

countess dracula, yep it does not hurt during the process but i can certainly vouch for the after pains.... mine took a few days to settle . use plenty of mouth wash to keep it clean and regular paracetamol helped (kind of), guess it'll be soup for tea otherwise .
good luck

sleepysooz · 29/08/2006 20:03

I've had all my wisdom teeth out, and its better for top teeth to be taken out, as they drain well (yuk) shouldn't take longer than a week for the soreness to go off, keep taking the tablets! have salt water rinses, helps to heal quicker!

My Sympathy!

CountessDracula · 30/08/2006 20:18

A WEEK??!?!?!?!

Oh god I don't think I can wait that long

I have had two bottom teeth (premolars) removed, one of them with an abcess, and the other with lots of hacking about and tissue damage, and they weren't painful after a couple of days.

Posey · 30/08/2006 20:24

I've had all wisdom teeth out, all in varying degrees of eruption, all at different times. Twice I never needed any painkillers, the other times just for about 24 hours.

claireh11 · 31/08/2006 10:24

Take some solpadeine max - they are the bees knees in pain killers theyhelped me loads when I had a tooth out, was great for the pain afterwards. If I remember rightly I also felt a bit rough afterwards and wanted to sleep quite a bit - dunno why but it was great to be able to go off to bed for hours ocne oyu have kids. HTH
