spots on tongue - any ideas?

DS (2.5) has been generally under the weather for about 5 days, off food, it clingy and fed up but no temperature.

took him to docs on thursday as i thought he might be developing tonsilitis (he's had it a couple of times) but she said he was fine, probably just figting off a virus (his glands are swollen)

But today I've noticed he has tiny tiny spots on his tongue and this is obviously stopping him from wanting to eat. Any ideas what this might be?

My son get this when he is under the weather - it is what my doctor calls 'strawberry tongue!'. Are they red in colour? if so I would think that this is what they are - and they are just a side effect of the virus. If it is bothering you and it doesnt improve take him back to the doctors next week, but I think it is harmless.

Could they be mouth ulcers? dd1 had them at this age when her back teeth were coming through. I couldn't fathom it out at all - went to the pharmacist who asked if she could be teething and it all suddenly made sense. We just used bonjela on them, but I think time is the only thing that makes any difference, unfortunately.

hmm, they are redish carlyb and they don't really look like ulcers.

katie, sounds like what my ds had. It is quite common when you have a cold, virus. I have actually had them as well! They dont hurt - just usually a symptom of a sore throat (which would make sense as your doctor said he was fighting off a virus).
Unless something drastic happens - like he starts being sick, has a temperature - I wouldnt worry. It is just his body fighting the virus. You might find he will get a smelly breath with it.

Like I said before if you get really worried - go back to your doctors - even if it is just to put your mind at rest. x x

Katie - How is he today? Any better?

katierocket · 22/03/2004 13:11

thanks carlyb - I'm pretty sure you're right. He's better today but still not that interested in eating anything crunchy or hard.
Am keeping a beady eye on him!
