hi everyone, my ds has atarted with a red rash around his anus, its not on the skin of his bum cheeks, just around his anus and abit going up to his scrotum. its very red and looks like tint bumps under the skin. its very noticeable immediately after a poo, and recently he has been crying when pooing even though it is coming out quite soft and sticky. he is on lactulose. i am breastfeeding. he is also teething at the moment. i have looked in his mouth for thrush but cant see anything but i have ben getting sore nipples with whiteish spots in the nipples.

please help so i can stop it getting worse

sounds like it could be trush, esp if its red with raised bumps - my ds had this with the weather being warm and humid - can you get to a doc today? or go and see your chemist - sounds like you also might need to be treated, though thrush in ducts is very painful.

i have some canesten with mild steroid the doc gave me when he had thrush at 6 weeks. i'll try that and nappy free time. im using cloth nappies, do i have to do anything special if it is thrush with regards to cleaning them etc?

Hi vnmum

Teething will make bottoms really sore because all the excess saliva reacts with stomach acid in some chemically way I don't understand, but it makes for evil nappies.

What are you using for cleaning? I was using just water and washable wipes, but on my HVs advice (I have the only good HV in the Western World!) she suggested that that woudlnt' get tid of all the poo traces because it can be quite waxy. So I've made up my own invented solution which is working wonders (dd's bum would regularly bleed with rash until changing this.)

I mix a generous squirt of that Simple baby lotion - no perfume/colour etc, some drops of tea tree oil and boiling water in an old ice cream tub and then soak the wipes in it. Flannels would work fine too. It's gentle enough not to irritate, but has enough power to shift all of the eurgh on the skin. Better than conventional wipes too.

Regular baths - maybe even morning and evening? (Hassle I know but might work)

Metanium in a thin layer is also very good.

Use fleece liners instead of flushable ones.

Silk liners are meant to be good for nappy rash although I've never tried them.

Definitely go and see GP and mention thrush - don't wait for him/her to dismiss you.

I wouldn't put Canesten on your ds' bum without advice cos it can be quite powerful stuff.

Give all your nappies as extra rinse in the wash just to make sure the washing powder isn't irritating already sore skin.

Um....can't think of anything else, but will keep pondering!

thanks bobsmum

i cant get metanium here as im in germany, but i am using fleece liners already, and am using camomile tea to clean his bum and as much air time as possible. the rash is just between his cheeks though so perhaps doesnt get as much air as it could if it were on his cheeks. i used fleece wrap last night for breathability. i cant get simple lotion here either but i have got some boots own sensitive baby lotion, i might try that, although i cabnt get tea tree oil here unless i go to an aromatherapist. they dont sell it over the counter. a right pain.

i have read about sterilising nappies in the microwave but cant find anywhere that says how long you put them in for. do you know about this?

im washing at 60 with an extra rinse just incase its thrush and using 1 - 2 tblsp powder depending on how many nappies im washing at the time.

i am beginning to think it could be his teeth as he has been teething for over a week now and had started drooling past few days, not loads but more than normal and i can see the shape of two teeth in his top gum.

by the way, i was impressed with the fleece wrap, the bamboozle was soaking but the wrap only felt slightly damp apart from one small patch on front where it was wet and had gone through to the vest, but like i said the nappie was soaked as ds fed alot last night
