Positive Breast Cancer Stories please

Looking for some encouragement really - Mum's been diagnosed with breast cancer, it's also in the lymph nodes on one side. Had a CT scan today but won't get the results until after the bank holiday, praying it hasn't spread further. She thought it was another cyst, and left it longer than usual to be checked out. She's also been under extreme stress caring (with her sister) for my gran, 102.

Looks like chemo first then an op but consultant won't make a final decision until the CT scan results are in.

Just looking for some positive stories to give her and the rest of the family encouragement.

My great aunt had it in the 1970's. She's still here.

I think modern medicine is so well equipped to deal with this disease now. When my father's mother had it in the late 60's it was an operation only - no follow up analysis or treatment. She still lived until the early 1980's.

But my own mother, she's had breast cancer 3 separate (and clinically unrelated) times over a 12 year period. Each time treated differently - radiotherapy, surgery and chemo. She's been totally 100% clear of it for 5 yrs now and I have every expectation that she'll live another 20 odd years.

Good luck - I mean it, and take care.

My DH nan (who is 93) had had it 3 times and she'll be celebraing another birtday on 15th sept although she did have most of the lymph nodes removed in august 04 as cancer came back on the same side each time. Sorry don't know many other details as no one ever speaks about it but she is fit an well and has a better social life than me and DH put together!

Been through this recently with my mum. She has had a mastectomy and despite being given a poor prognosis initially and being told she would need chemo, the tumour was a different type than initially thought and all her lymph nodes were clear. So she has not had to have any chemo. We were so pleased.

I know a lady who is going through this atm though and she is still managing to work through her chemo - having 5 days off post chemo then working again. She says she really does feel able to do it and looked fab when I saw her. Just have to hope that the CT results are clear - but even if not there is most usually a lot that can be done. Good luck to you both.

I was diagnosed nearly a year ago and I've just had the first annual check up - all clear. Mine was also in my lymph nodes and I've done chemo and radiotherapy and had surgery. It's hard work, but do-able. For me, the waiting for results was the absolute worst time - dealing with the shock of the diagnosis, having to make really big decisions about what type of surgery, etc, and yet still not knowing exactly what I was up against was just dreadful. I'm a lot closer to my family now than I was before diagnosis - they were great.
Hope the CT is clear. If you've got any questions, feel free to CAT me, or ask here. Also, the breastcancercare.org.uk site is really helpful - there's a chat forum there, or you can ring their nurses (or your mum can) if you've got any questions.

Hi Jodee
Sorry you and your mum are going through this.
My best friend's mum had treatment for breast cancer last year - she is in remission now and has just celebrated the birth if her first grandchild and her daughter's wedding.
She had a total mastectomy on one side with chemo and radiotherapy. She is back at work and enjoying life.
My darling aunty is having treatment for cancer at the moment and is doing really well. She is having very strong chemo and is doing ok and looking forward to her first grandchild being born in February.
I feel for you at this really hard time. Please try to remember that everyone's cancer is different and that they respond to treatment differently and statistics are just that - not a definite outcome.
Best wishes,
xx

My best friend at school's Mum had it in both breasts in the early 70s, and is still alive and well today. My aunt has had it, and is fine. So much depends on type, and spread, etc...but it really truly is a treatable illness, especially now.
Good luck with the scan results, and good wishes to you, your Mum, and the rest of your family in dealing with the journey ahead.

small hijack

Lalaa, hurrah for the one year all clear! I'm so very glad. Wishing you loads more of them.xx

My aunt had it over 10 years ago. She is still very much alive; barking mad, but that is nothing to do with the cancer.

Hi Jodee. How's your mum getting on? Any news? You know where I am if I can help in anyway. {{{{ lotsa sparkly hugs }}}} x
