Do local anaesthetics ever not work for some people? Feeling a bit shell shocked by my experience today :(

I've just come home from hospital after an aborted attempt to have an operation on my foot. I opted to have it done under local thinking the recovery might be faster than under GA. Firstly I was quite unprepared for how painful it would feel as the local went in, but that's nothing compared to the pain as the surgeon started cutting. They tried giving me more local three times, each time he attempted to make an incision I could feel sharp pain. In the end they had to postpone the op as I'd eaten and couldn't have a GA. I feel really traumatised by the amount of pain I went through, I've never had a local anaesthetic before. Is it possible they just don't work for some people?

I had a dodgy bit cut out of my arm a couple of months ago. The site, extending to my hand felt cold and numb until the next morning. I think if its still the same tomorrow then maybe get it seen but its probably down to the sheer amount he put in.

I hope so OYBBK, he was piling the stuff in! It's really hard to walk at the moment.

How's it going today?

OuchyMcOuch · 30/04/2014 09:56

Thanks for asking OYBBK. Half of my foot is still feeling very odd, kind of like how your skin feels just before you're about to get pins and needles. The incision is still stinging but it's bearable.

Sorry I didn't get back to you. It sounds like that sort of LA doesn't really suit you at all! Hope it's still heading in the right direction.

I have erhlers danlos syndrome and need industrial quantities of local anaesthetic for minor procedures. Literally top up after top up until the relevant bit is numb enough to sort out. The dentist has to give me as much as possible and I had the sides of both big toenails removed last year and also needed masses before my toes were numb. I also find painkillers don't work very well either. Paracetemol is ineffective for pain and even for a normal headache I need a combination of co-codamol and ibuprofen and sometimes even this doesn't touch it. I'm only a little person too, so in theory, shouldn't need a high enough dosage of anything to fell a mammoth.

Apparently redheads need more anaesthetic too. I had a tooth out, dentist muttered "red hair, more anaesthetic and you'll be a bleeder too" Grin
(He wasn't wrong)

Fan I used to get shaky and feel awful after dental anaesthetic (although thankfully no problems with effectiveness) had to be driven home and go to bed for several hours every time. Last time I had root canal I spoke to my dentist and she gave me one with no adrenalin which made a huge difference.
