Weight and menopause

I seem to have had peri-menopausal symptoms for a couple of years. I have read somewhere that high levels of oestrogen in your system (?) can stop/delay you going through the menopause, and this can be caused by being overweight. I have a few stone to shift, which is a work in progress, but I am 53, and getting a bit naffed off now. Any body throw any light on this, or have I mis-read something?

PS I have posted this in Menopause, but no replies. TIA

Not quite sure what you are asking...?
At 53 that is not especially late for menopause. The average age UK is 52.
I ( and plenty of friends) were still having periods at 53 and even 54 ( and not even slightly overweight.)
Women who are overweight may have fewer menopause symptoms in peri, due to perhaps having more oestrogen, but it varies hugely. Sometimes being overweight causes more problems during peri because the body gets hotter due to carrying excess weight , you might sweat more, and it's harder to exercise which can help peri symptoms.
What you may have read is that AFTER the menopause women who are overweight have higher oestrogen levels because fat produces weak oestrogens. This is why being overweight post menopause is a higher risk factor for breast cancer than being a normal weight.

I was concerned that I was too fat for menopause, and it was holding it up Pink. From what you are saying, this is not the case. I am working on the weight, but relieved to know this is not just another problem from it. Hopefully will have shifted most of it by the time I am through it. Thanks for all that info. Have posted before, got no response, and began to think people were avoiding saying, "Yes you are. Hth". :)

No- it's not a problem from it. Looking at it logically, 60%+ of women are overweight- so if your theory worked, none of them would go through menopause until they were very old- or ever!

Thanks Pink Smile
