Doanti depressants make you sleepy? I think my dh is out for the night!

Poor dh has done something very serious indeed to his back and has been told he needs amajor operation.

Anyway, the doctor gave him Laroxyl, not as an AD but as a muscle relaxant. (he's never taken any ADs before)

Anyway,he fell asleep at the restaurant where we met for lunch.I drove him home, put him to bed,and haven't heard a peep for five hours.

Is this normal?????

Yes, completely normal. Everything relaxes, not just the muscles that are being targetted.

Sorry to hear he needs the surgery, hope it's over and done with really soon.

moondog · 24/08/2006 17:12

Thanks.
At least he is getting some rest.

So,if you are taking ADs because you are depressed,do they make you sleepy like this too??

My dp had those and paracetomol with codeine for a back injury and he was so drowsy when he first took them and as he got used to them he was just very amenable and ds and I took advantage and had him agreeing to allsorts I think it is ok in the short term dp took them for 3 weeks but even then he noticed he found it hard to sleep without them

moondog · 24/08/2006 17:15

Am likng the sound of that amenable trait very much indeed.

He was giving me extra loving looks before he conked out over his food.
I think the waiters thought he was dead!

The SSRIs didn't make me that sleepy, although I was a bit dozy for a day or two.

I was given some of the older type ones for RSI once though (can't remember what they were called though, but they were given as a muscle relaxant) and they knocked me out completely, I didn't move from the sofa for a week.

The initial side-effects tend to wear off after the first week or two, so it shouldn't be a long-term problem if that's your concern!

moondog · 24/08/2006 17:16

SSRIs????

Seratonin something Reuptake Inhibitors......(SSRI)

I am on SSRI's and theoretically, they dont make you sleep (so my GP said), but I was very sleepy the first month I was on them. HOwever, one of the big symptoms of depression is insomnia so I suppose if the AD's were doing their job the insomnia would have been disappearing, thus making me tired.

I have heard of people being prescribed temazapam/valium for back injuries/strains because the muscles go in to spasm after an injury and make it worse, or something..... but they aren't AD's as such, they are tranqs, arent they?

Your poor DH though, he must be miserable with the pain. I totally sympathise.

WigWamBam · 24/08/2006 17:26

SSRIs (selective seatonin re-uptake inhibitors)are the more modern ads, like Prozac. They don't have the same side-effects as the older tricyclates.

moondog · 24/08/2006 17:27

Ah,so tranquilisers and ADs are different??

Yes,poor sod.

He has a scarey corset on too.

Doctor wanted to hospitalise him today.

We are in Turkey so have to think now about gettin home.He has been told he will be off work for three months.

Bloody hell.....

Oh feck Moondog what's he done exactly?

Sounds really serious?

moondog · 24/08/2006 17:33

He wasdangling ds in the pool two weeks ago, then yelped in pain.
Two weeks later was no better so went to doc.
Within an hour was having MRI,the works....

They seem to think he has had some massive trauma to verterbrae L3 (?) and keep asking if he has been in a car crash!

It seem the bone is pressing on spinal cord.

They say they need to take bone from his hip to fix it as well as put in a titanium plate.

I can't fecking believe it.It's like some bad dream.

Can't help wondering if they are going completely ott???

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 24/08/2006 17:35

Good grief, sounds horrendous - poor bugger.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/08/2006 17:41

Can never be ott with back injuries IMO.

L3 is a low down lumbar vertebrae...I think thats the one thats fused in mine and shouldnt be. Could be that he has always had some kind of weakness there and the result of this incident is worse than it would be in a "normal" spine.

Not unusual. I have a malformed sacro iliac joint and some extra fused vertebrae. Didnt find out until 3 years ago, despite having had xrays in my teens to identify why I had back problems, and also after I was in a car accident. They STILL didnt spot that my sacro iliac joint was split into 3 instead of being one whole piece. Explains why my SPD was so severe, anyway.....Tell DH to get himself into hospital hun, not worth risking with an injury like they say he has.....im sure you know the consequences.....

moondog · 24/08/2006 18:16

Blimey
What treatment have you had then VVV?

(He's woken up now, very refreshed and in much less pain. )

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/08/2006 18:24

ER....none! They suggested that because I had gone for 28 years without a problem (and through a pregancy too) then there was no reason to interfere now, just take pain killers. (Which i've just had to get something slightly stronger than paracetamol from docs this week).

The rheumatologist I saw at the time, who said i was "an interesting and very unusual case" , said they could bolt it together, but didnt think that would really make much of a difference. I trust his judgement because he is one of the top London rheumatologists who teaches at UCL.

I am peeved that I had been suffering from back adn leg aches since I was 12 and no-one managed to find out what was wrong with me before then, having endured 3 arthroscopies amongst other things.

Your DH's condition sounds much more risky though...since the spinal chord is under duress...
