So an ill baby might still smile - what about feeding? Does a seriously ill baby ever feed well?

Because that's another thing they told me was a good indicator whether to worry about ds or not.

I'd say no - an acutely, seriously ill baby does in my experience not feed well. At all. Feeding is quite hard work for babies and a sick baby will not have the strength to feed well.

I don't know the answer em, but I'm glad to 'see' you. How is he? How are you?

(PS look here

Wow to the link - have posted!

Things very much mixed here - in brief - ds had to spend nine days in hospital when we were in Germany, with bronchiolitis, he's still struggling now and things are very much still up in the air.

My dd didn't feed Em. Was 10lb born but only 11lb 4 at 14 weeks . They kept telling me she was fine and I was tired and over-anxious.

How is Sebastian's weight gain. Is he doing OK?

emkana · 23/08/2006 22:56

He's been on the 98th percentile since birth.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/08/2006 22:57

Yay - way to go Sebastian! That's deffo a positive then

emkana · 23/08/2006 22:57

he weighs 15 1/2 lb at 9 weeks

My dd didn't weigh that at a year despite being a similar birth weight to your ds. There's a saying we often use to describe babies with heart problems and thats that they need 'calories to survive, not to thrive'. Sebastian is obviously using his to thrive.

emkana · 23/08/2006 23:06

I'm just always fearful that he might stop to thrive at some stage.

I agree entirely with geekgrrl.

geekgrrl · 24/08/2006 06:26

emkana, well, that does sound really encouraging.
my experience is similar to saggar's - dd2 was born weighing 9lbs4oz but was down to 8lbs at 8 weeks. She wasn't feeding all that terribly but burnt all the calories & more just by keeping going.

It's great to hear that he's growing so well.

can't believe it is 9 weeks already.

In answer to the original question - my gut feeling is if they are feeding well and gaining wait then they are not in any immediate danger and you can relax a bit.

yawningmonster · 24/08/2006 08:10

emkana, I have only the experience of my ds to go by but no he did not feed well or actually at all when seriously ill, it is still a fairly reliable indicator of his health now at almost 2, if he stops eating I start worrying!
