how to get sick 2 year old to take anti-biotics

no message really. She's sick and vomiting and every time she even tastes the anti-biotic (possible urinary infection) she vomits. Any clever tips on how to get her to keep it down?

Was going to say use a syringe, but obviosly that won't make any difference if she's being sick.

Hopefully she'll be getting a little bit in her system even if she's being sick.

If it carries on maybe phone NHS direct for their advice.

Hope this bumps it for you.

I mixed my sons with ice cream/yogurt or choc pudding as he vomited it up first time.

Thank you both for responding so quickly. She's now emptied her stomach and is bringing up bile - this has been going on and off since last Wednesday for heavens sake! I'll try mixing with puddings, perhaps it'll stay down long enough for some to be absorbed.

Is she keeping anything down?

alex8 · 23/08/2006 19:34

poor thing. My son brought a lot of bile with the first spoonful but kept it down with ice cream even though he hadn't been eating. He had done this with all antibiotics except thr last lot which he just took easily and now this time his hatred has returned. Will be so glad when he can take a tablet.

its annoying too cos it had to be kept in the fridge and for the last 2 days of the course we are on holiday with no access to a fridge, will have to ask pharmacy.

I woudl take her back to see the dr tomorrow. A young child vomiting for a week is worrying. Also I have never heard of a UTI causing vomiting. But I'm not a doctor or nurse, just a mum. I woudl go down there first thing and make a fuss

is she keeping down clear fluids? does she have a fever?

sorry dont have any tips on the antibiotics

Apparently UTI's in young children can present oddly, often without fever. As for keeping things down she wakes up OK, has an OK breakfast, some lunch but then it's as if the pressure of the food kicks in and she's brings it all back up again - mostly undigested. I was counting the raisins she had for a snack at 10am at 5.30pm in the bath - big yuck. Doctor has urine sample, results Friday, will see but until then I demanded something so will try antibiotics.

Good luck and just keep trying. The ice cream trick sounds like a good idea.

I've heard UTI's can cause vomiting, but would still take her back if she's still poorly tomorrow.

Yup, I haven't done the full 'throw the toys all over the surgery until you're taken seriously' trick yet. perhpas it's time - although I've seen 3 doctors and they couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating, I'm stumped too, no idea what it could be. Supper now bye bye.

It doenst sound like any vomiting bug i have ever heard of!! Usually you are sick for a period of time then it gets better. I dont underastand why she's sick every aftrenoon/ evening but then better the next day.

Sorry i am not trying to worry you. But I have a 2yo and if he were like that and 3 GPs didnt knwo what was wrong i woudl be asking for him to be referred up to the nearest childrens hospital asap. I would sit in the surgery until they had an appointment for my child to be seen later that day

But thats just me..........
