First mammogram appt, what to expect?

It's just a routine appt & is free for over 40's where I live. (Am not in the UK). Do I need to take off my necklace & body bar? The only instructions on the website say to not wear any talc or deodorant. Will they tell me there & then the results?

I had my first one 2 weeks ago, not as bad as I thought. I had to strip to the waist completely then the radiographer just guided me as to what to do. I wasn't embarrassed and it was over quickly. I'm quite big busted and it wasn't sore at all. I forgot about the deodorant thing but it was in the afternoon and she never mentioned it.

Is your body bar in your nipple or naval? I'd think you'd need to take a nipple piercing out.

I actually found it quite painful, but i do have painful lumpy breasts anyway - which was why i was having a mammogram!

I have them annually. I dont put on deodorant or moisturiser and remove all jewellery. I take a flannel to have a quick wash just before if I've had a bit of a journey. I'm asked to strip to waist level then there are two positions each side. They check the xrays come out but don't give me results until a few weeks later. I think the consultant checks them. I've never found it painful. A bit like having blood pressure taken. And the nurses are doing one after another so I've not felt embarrassed. It's not too bad.

I just had my first one two weeks ago. I was instructed not to use any deodorant, powder, or lotion. You change into a gown from the waist up. My technician was lovely. She told me everything that was going to happen. I have very large boobs. It was uncomfortable at times, but never painful to me. The entire process took about 10 minutes. I was asked to stay in the gown and have a seat in a private internal waiting room. A radiologist read my images and came in to tell me everything looked normal. She provided me with a letter confirming the negative results. I was so relieved to receive the results immediately. I made my appointment for 2015 on the way out. I was a bit worried about having one as my boobs were really sore that month but I was pleasantly surprized at how quick and (nearly) painless it actually was. Good Luck.

Thanks Marylou 62. I don't suffer with painful boobs so I'm sure it will all be ok. I have no family history of breast cancer but thought it best to be screened.

I didn't know about the deoderant though - and as I'm all hot and hormonal, it's not something I want to go without .

Nowhere near as bad as all the mean buggers at work told me it would be I imagined.

You do feel squashed but it's not painful I found.

Thanks I forgot to update. All went ok but I did feel squashed after too. Just got to wait to hear within 14 days. If anything they are not sure about then will have to go to a specialist centre for more detailed images.
