I kept my ds gluten free for the first 12 months because of allergies in the family. Remember that a six month old has no real concept of normal food yet, and doesn't know he is missing out in any way.

I gave ds the rice biscuits from the baby section in Boots (Organix do them too)as finger food instead of toast. I found some corn ones too but that was in NZ.

Some cornflakes and Rice pops have gluten because they are flavoured with malt. I feed ds sweet potato for breakfast, or used baby rice up until a year and mixed with different fruits. He didn't seem to care.

It's great it's been caught so quick before a lot of gut damage was done.

The manager of our Sainsbo's should read this thread - I used to work for him and was packing my shopping this week when he sidled up and hissed "what's gluten?"

charlie, sorry to hear about your ds, but it does sound from reading this as if it's not too difficult to manage (and must be a relief in a way if you've been having probs and worrying about what the matter was?)

yes please twiglett

Good point from Bob about the malt in cereals- the organic ones are usually malt free. I thought that some coeliacs could tolerate malt though? DS1 can't, but he's not coeliac.

Worth bearing in mind if you try the standard cereals though

The other thing is that if a food contans less than 1% gluten it can be labelled as gluten free. This tiny amount of gluten is still enough to sendds1 crazy so I never trust "gluten free" labels. I think in most cases coeliacs are find with this amout of gluten, but if you did have problems it would be worht bearing in mind.

Just a few hints that i've picked up as an adult with gluten allergy!!

Terance Stamp breads- available in lots of big supermarkets, small loaves dont last long but very tasty.

Tamari- is a wheat free alternative to soy sauce good for flavouring etc

Corn pasta is ok, rice noodles. rice crackers are a good alternative. try also looking up Glutafin and dietary specialities they do some good stuff by mail order.

Also if you try local health food shops they sometimes stock home made breads that can be quite good.

Hope some of this is useful

That may have been the monosodium glutamate charlie. Lots in chinese food and a common allergen. Look out for "flavour enhancer" or MSG on ingredients. It shouldn't be in baby fod anyway. You may have to look out for it when he gets older and eats crisps- Walkers ready salted are ok.

What are good gluten free snack (bribery)foods for when he reaches toddlerhood. Tried him on a rice cake and he wasnt impressed, bless him it was his first finger food.

Once ds1 is in school properly (summer term please god) then I am going to start baking again- more than just bread. I may pinch some recipes from you.....

Charlie,

May not be much help, but my 20yr old nephew nearly died as he was misdiagnosed when he was a baby, (the doctor kept saying it was a bug), but it sounds as though your son has good doctors, and now my nephew is a big strapping lad who works on a building site and now he can eat what he wants with no adverse effects.

thanks twiglett. Been feeling very guilty about my lack of baking recently, but I'm never in the house long enough! Summer resolution.

Charlie try marmite flavoured rice cakes both my kids are addicted having been offered them by gluten free uncle and aunt. You can also get choclate coated ones.

one of my friends has coeliac disease - I've seen photos of her as a child with v skinny arms/legs & a big round tummy. she makes her own bread - I think the panasonic bread machine comes out best in all the consumer tests. when another friend came round to our house unexpectedly I made her a veggie stir fry - and nearly put soy sauce in as I hadn't realised it has gluten in it! (put chilli in instead)

although watch marmite flavour if you think there may be an MSG problem. Pretty sure its in there (its in most "flavours" iyswim). Unfortunately ds1 can't have marmite anyway, so I'm not sure what the ingredients are.

I've had coeliac disease for 37 years and my dd was diagnosed 3 years ago aged 18 months. Life is much easier now with so much choice for gluten free food but any ideas for home made bread? Does anybody recommend a particular bread maker?

the panasonic one (about £100) is supposed to be the best.
