I'm here for next 20 mins, what do you need? Pm me if you prefer

Shoegal0305 · 20/04/2014 18:03

Paramedic here.....

vet272 · 20/04/2014 18:12

My 23 year old daughter has found a large, painless lump in her left breast. Drop in dr said she must be fast tracked ASAP but she can't see her uni surgery doc until Tuesday and they are awful at giving the students appointments. What would the hospital do if she turned up at a and e? Her lymph nodes are enlarged too

IslaMann · 20/04/2014 18:16

Tbh hospital would prob expedite fast track if they thought it necessary but nothing will happen until Tues, due to Bank Hol. But go, as it will at least make you feel like your doing something, and could even rule out anything sinister. You would not get told off for attending A&E, so yes, go.

Shoegal0305 · 20/04/2014 18:18

I think only further investigations will provide the reassurance you need....... Sorry I wish I could give you a more proactive answer but I think in my experience A&E would only refer you on to a clinic etc later in the week? X

vet272 · 20/04/2014 18:18

So she wouldn't just be told to leave? Can the hospital fast track on their own without a go referral? She's at uni in Warwick and I'm in liverpool. So hard to support her and I don't know what to tell her

Bear in mind I'm not a nurse I'm a paramedic so see things slightly different. No A&E will turn her away. I just think in all honesty if it's not an accident or an emergency (and can't be treated right now) all they will do is refer her? If she goes, they may be able to give her, and you, a little reassurance, but cast iron answers need tests that A&E won't be willing to do. X

ggirl · 20/04/2014 19:00

when she goes to GP on tuesday they will arrange a 2 week referral if they think it is necessary

don't think there is any way of speeding this up over the bank holiday I'm afraid

reassure your daughter to try and relax this weekend and make appt first thing tuesday

It's very worrying I know I've had that scare and luckliy everything was fine as are most lumps.

TalkToFrank · 20/04/2014 19:08

The hospital wont do anything more than the GP will do. A and E is there to rule out (or in) any immediate threat to life/injury etc. They wouldn't turn you away but it wouldn't be an appropriate use of resources.

If she phones her GP on Tues as soon as the phone lines open, she can explain the situation to the receptionist if necessary and she will be given an emergency appointment.

vet272 · 20/04/2014 19:19

#ggirl, #shoegal0305, #islamann. Thank you for all your support. It helped more than you can imagine. God bless you
#talktofrank you really think now was a good time to point out this 'wouldn't be an appropriate use of resources' for the NHS? I feel sorry for you if that's the level of compassion you are able to show a family in crisis

You must be very worried but it's the Easter weekend, so A&E are unlikely to be able to do anything other than treated the emergent problem. I'm sure if she phones on Tuesday and explains its an emergency, they will see her and she will be referred to the breast clinic. Just to reassure you, she's not in an at-risk age group and even then, most lumps are harmless. So, fingers crossed she gets the all clear soon. Flowers

malteserzz · 20/04/2014 19:43

I can understand how worried you are but really the best thing would be for her to wait until Tuesday and insist on an appointment.

Wishiwashelenmirren · 20/04/2014 21:25

Try calling out of hours tomorrow morning and see what they say, but do expect them to advice contacting GP on Tuesday. Not terribly helpful when worry takes over, but at least you both know you've done what you can at this point.

She'll have an urgent referral to a breast unit, most likely have bloods taken and an ultrasound, they might wish to proceed to a fine needle aspiration as well (local anesthetic). Personally I'd be at the practice door come Tuesday morning, everyone will being phoning for appointments after the weekend and it's one less stress for her to physically be there and get things moving.

So sorry this is such a worrying time for you both, try to keep in mind that as malt says your dd is in the low risk age bracket.

JohFlow · 20/04/2014 22:10

I had a painless, large lump just to the left of my nipple at around the same age as your daughter. Finding any lump certainly puts the creepers up you - so you and your daughter have all my empathy. My greatest fear was breast cancer and I can remember that was all I thought about in the few days before I was able to have it checked out medically. In my case; luckily it was just a cyst and it was treated and gone within a month. I think that lucking at the worse case scenario is a perfectly human reaction in the circumstances and it does serve a purpose is preparing for what's next. However; sometimes lumps aren't so sinister. I would do everything you and your daughter can do in person/on the telephone with docs ASAP - even if it is just to talk, get some questions answered or reassurance. I hope that it is not the big 'C' - but stay in touch eitherway. You have our support.

Thanks to everyone for taking the trouble to reply. Wish it were Tuesday...

I know the Warwick Medical Centre on campus is an offshoot of a large and well equipped GP surgery in Coventry. Could she call the surgery rather than the Medical Centre?

vet272 · 21/04/2014 15:22

Oh, didn't know that! Thanks #RockinD. Do you know the name of the surgery at all?
