Migraine sufferers- do your children get them too?

Ds2 is 5.9 and I think he had a migraine today. A really severe headache came on quite quickly (he was nearly in tears and said that his brain was hurting :( ) and he took himself off to bed, went to sleep very fast which is unheard of for him. Slept for 3 hours and still went to bed at normalish time. Ravenous at tea time too.

This is very similar to the pattern of my migraines- which started about aged 8 I think. I hoped that my children would not suffer as my mum and I both have (as well as my materal gran and think great gran too).

I understand that migraines are likely to run in families- but I am wondering whether 5 is just too young to start speculating whether this headache of ds2's is the start of recurrent migraines. Just so worried for him now :(

Any advice or experience to share?

We, too, are a 'migraine family'

Do you have a 'migraine society' where you are? Perhaps it would be a good idea to contact them, if you've not already done this.

My DS was 4 when he had his first attack of childhood migraine. Very much the way you describe them. We have been told that in children it can be managed so as to reduce the risk of carrying the condition over into adulthood, so we are keeping an eye on him for triggers etc.

All the best for your DS!

I started suffering migraines a couple of years ago, in the last 6 months ds (6) has had two episodes where a sudden and severe headache has come out of nowhere. Both times he was crying his heart out and beside himself, within 20 minutes of each one begining he was sick. The headache subsided quite quickly once he was sick.

Yup. Took my boy to the GP when he was about nine or ten and the very first thing he asked was which of his parents also got them. That would be me.

In our family we had/have maternal grandmother, maternal aunt, myself, 3 female daughters.

Sorry you are so worried about this. My mum, 2 DB (of 4), me and now my DD all have migraines. I had my first at 15, blind, sick and wanting to die of the headache (tho DM said I was a headachy child). DB has ones where if hes sick they go. DD unfortunately has same as me. I had a hemiplegic migraine just before labour with her started...V V V scary as everyone thought I'd had a stroke. Don't really have any advice its just one of those things. I always try not to get too tired, don't drink alcohol much and try my hardest not to get too stressed...but still have them sometimes. My DM always used to say...whilst holding my hair back and rubbing my back during vomits....'Only intelligent people get migraines'!
