If it's not food poisoning, IBS, food intolerance... then what is it? Diagnose me please!

Sorry in advance for TMI, it's nothing serious and not GP worthy but I've run out of ideas of what to search for on NHS Direct/patient.co.uk/the internet generally.

I've had this a number of times now. The first I remember is last April, then again in the summer, twice at the beginning of December and then again last night. The first few times I thought it was food poisoning, but it keeps recurring and DH and DS have been fine each time.

I wake up (always about midnight) with that rumbley belly feeling and nausea. I rush to the loo with diarrhea. I feel better for a few minutes then start getting this awful going-to-be-sick feeling in my stomach, like it is in a vice. That escalates and I start getting cold tingles in my hands and arms until it feels like full on pins and needles. I'm then violently sick. The pins and needles disappears as soon as I am sick.

If I drink any water at all, this all happens all over again within 5 minutes. If I don't drink anything, then I continue to feel very sick but not actually be so. It's has if my body refuses to have anything in it at all.

I've looked up symptoms of food poisoning, food intolerance, abdominal migraine, IBS, coelics...everything I can think of but nothing fits. The only common element is roasted garlic, but we eat garlic all the time so unless there is something strange about roasting it then it is unlikely to be that.

Any suggestions of what else it might be? Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at other things you're exposed to during the day? Drinks, aerosols, toothpaste, travel, stress?
You might not fit every bullet point of a suspected allergy or intolerance but if you have more than 3 on the list it's wort looking in to.
If you're sure it's food or drink related how about asking your GP to support you in a restricted diet, slowly adding things back in until you can isolate what is causing it.
Hope you figure it out soon, sounds horrid.

I've had the exact same thing happen to me twice recently, and a few times in the last year. Its really horrible, but I can't pin it on anything either, sorry.

Panic attack?

Hamnvik · 18/04/2014 10:41

I have had something similar in the last year and I have worked out it is caffeine! No more than one cuppa a day and it hasn't happened for a few months now. I can get away with a little bit but can't tolerate Coke or Energy drinks at all. It certainly sounds the same I would try and write down what you ate before the episode and compare it next time.

I would see a Dr as they may suggest a barium meal. Maybe it's a hiatus hernia as lying down can cause problems at night.
I hope you find out what's causing it it must be terrible for you.
Motilium 10 is good for nausea.

It could also be an allergy to something. My daughter had a reaction to eating something with paprika.

go and see a doctor!! that's what they are there for and what they have trained for years for!

Please make an appointment to see your GP. Any changes in bowel habits should be investigated & if this is happening on a regular basis something must be causing it. Try not to worry & don't google - you will scare yourself. Good luck.

Definitely see a GP. Any persistent change in bowel habits need to be investigated.
