day 4 of emp for 13month old, still not eating solids, drinking, rash on face and chest. doctor says probably viral but start using ab's just in case. tmp now 37.6, should i use more calpol. the bottle says 48 hours only, now 72 hours plus. she is well otherwise. scared to go to sleep, because rash now developed. what would you do?

give more calpol or is this temp okay to let her ride it out. just given first dose of antibiotics.

feel like rash could be due to overuse of calpol and ibuprofen??? or is it just viral

GP says not neasles or meningitis,

she also has inflamed throat.

please help. DH on night work and feel so alone

I would ring NHS Direct. It might be a good idea to see an out of hours GP in case the rash is a side-effect of the a/bs.

Try not to panic, I know it's horrible when your baby is ill. Big hugs.

my ds has calpol most days when he's teething.
i think it says only for 48 hours in case you use it rather than take ur child to doc.

SenoraPostrophe · 22/08/2006 21:12

the 48 hours thing isn't a rule in itself as such, just that you should always see a gp after that amount of time. since you have seen your doc, I'd just keep giving the calpol and ibuprofen myself.

rashes are very common with viruses - never heard of one as a reaction to too much calpol. you know about the glass test?

Kidstrack · 22/08/2006 21:16

sounds viral, as you have been prescribed antibiotics i would just use this and ibrobufen , i always find the ibrobufen works better than calpol, hope your dd is better soon

Janbo25 · 22/08/2006 21:18

You are fine to continue giving calpol, my ds suffers from febrile convulsions and so with the first sign of a temp we give both calpol and ibuprofen which we have been advised to do for as long as is neccessary i.e sometimes 7 days. I would perhaps give her a dose of ibuprofen which will work better and last longer and i'm sure with a couple more doses of ab's she's be fighting fit.

SenoraPostrophe · 22/08/2006 21:19

actually calpol works better than ibuprofen with a fever, ibuprofen is better with earache or toothache.

forevermore · 22/08/2006 21:32

just thought that it may be a side effect (the rash) yes done glass test and fine, also GP says not "that" sort of rash. My fears are overuse of calpol and how many days without solids is okay?
she has only had one dose of calpol since 11am, should i give ibuprofen now? Gave first dose of ab's at 6pm (how long till that kicks in?)
i was thinking the calpol may be the cause of her loose stools? or is this again unlikely?

forgot to say. thanks for advice so far, i am feeling more confident in my ability to deal with this already.

BTW NHS direct say temp up to 38.5 whilst sleeping is okay and don't wake her for calpol unless it goes over this???

sorry last thing. never seen a baby with a viral rash. how long is this likely to last. just started today and alrady over torso and face, not arms or legs though. oh yes and a bit on groin area.

amoxycillin, she has had it before for a chest infection (no rash). Also rash came before (from lunchtime) i started ab's (testime) so i know its not because of that.

could the rash be a heat rash from the prolonged temperature?
best wishes to you, anyway.

Squarer · 22/08/2006 22:11

In terms of temperature, nurofen treats the quickest in terms of reducing the temp. Nurofen and calpol can be given side by side so long as you don't go over the 4 hours apart for calpol and 6 hours apart for nurofen.
When I was made aware this information, it was to reduce temperatures of over 40 deg and the one that worked best was the nurofen by a long chalk.
I don't think 37.6 is dangerously high. My DS got a speckly rash which kind of merged into one big red splodge when the temperatures got really high when he was really hot. The speckles lasted for a day or so after his last really big temperature.
Hope you go on alright tonight

forevermore · 22/08/2006 22:43

GP said it could be heat rash too!

never knew you could get this from fever just presumed it was caused only by the sun.
