migraine or sinus pain?

Last August I had a severe headache that lasted 15 days. By day 10 I was in so much pain I went to the Dr and she said it was a migraine and put me on amitryptiline. The headache was less severe after three days of the tablets and gone by 5 days.

On and off since I've been on the amitryptiline Ive had the pains come and go. I get so anxious that it will turn into a 15 day severe headache again but it never has.

Over the last couple of weeks it seems to be there in the back ground all the time.

The pain is behind my left eye, front of left side of forehead and on my brow bone eye socket. all on the left side.

if I push hard on the bones around my eye the pain subsides and my nose starts running. it dawned on my today that it could be sinus pain. does that sound plausible? I was never convinced it was migraine as I never suffered with it before, no visual disturbances and noise and light didnt make it worse. it was worse to lay down and worse to hang my head downwards.

Is it common to mistake sinus pain for migraine? is it worth a trip back to gp?

To me, this really sounds like sinus pain.

The giveaways for me from your post are the worse when leaning forwards, and the relief when you push on your eye bone.

It's shit, isn't it? I'd def go back to GP and ask re sinuses.

if it it sinus pain would that mean id need anti biotics or is it just One Of Those Things?!

No expert, but it doesn't sound like a migraine to me. Headache is just one of the many symptoms of migraine, the other common ones being nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light & sound, slurred speech etc

OP, it could be an infection, or it could be structural, so just one of those things. But you need a doc to tell you either way (and obvs confirm diagnosis in 1st place!).

For me, I was diagnosed as a kid with migraine, only years later did it turn out I have poorly-constucted sinus plumbing. So quite painful and not much I can do about it, but Utter Agony if they get infected.

I do find that warmth offers some relief - a hot water bottle, well-wrapped, held against my face. Well, that and painkillers, I'm not a martyr.

That could be another clue actually, I need to keep my head freezing cold during a migraine.

how did you find out your sinuses were pretty dire hazel? were you referred to ent?

This was aged about 12 maybe? I was back and forth to the docs quite a lot, getting meds for migraine, painkillers etc. I'd previously had all the tonsils/grommets/tonsils again ops, but this was the 80's and everyone seemed to have them. Then my GP retired, and the new one, when seeing me for a repeat prescription asked if anyone had ever discussed sinuses, and they hadn't. Back to the hospital for scans (can't remember back then if it was xray or CT, and whether I saw the ENT pre or post scan), and they saw that my sinuses were very narrow, and utterly blocked and infected. So it all went from there!

I would look into trigeminal neuralgia too, mine was misdiagnosed as sinusitis for 5 years. One dr told me after correctly diagnosing that sinus pain is usually worse if you apply pressure where as it can relieve nerve pain. I was prescribed amitryptraline too which helped enormously but made me really drowsy and then moved on to gabapentin which gave same relief with less side effects.
