Is swimming laps is excellent exercise, but I ponder what areas of my body system I'm exercising by swimming? Does it assist with weight reduction? If so then how much time should i have to spend in water? please people assist me !!

I love swimming and wondered sImilar. Only thing is I always get munchies after swimming!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 14/04/2014 07:22

My fitness pal or similar estimates how much energy various forms of exercise burn.

Goodness, I think munchies after any exercise are quite common, the key is to have something healthy handy!

munchkinmaster · 14/04/2014 07:24

I think munchies are way worse after swimming. I often feel quite energised and not hungry after gym but am hungry and knackered after swimming. Maybe I swim too slow and get cold?

Musicaltheatremum · 14/04/2014 09:33

30 mins of breast stroke uses 367 calories according to a website I used. So not a lot.
Weight loss is 90% diet. Excersise should be seen as something to get you healthy and maintain weight and tone up which makes you look better but you would need to do an awful lot of swimming to loose weight.

I am pretty fit just now but still overweight so am back to watching what I eat. I am at the gym daily working out hard for about 50 minutes and my weight is barely moving down.

You do need to swim at a brisk pace and gradually increase the number of laps you do in the same time. Breaststroke with head out of the water uses less calories than proper breaststroke and varying breaststroke and front crawl will use more muscles.
Combined with a health diet swimming can work.

I started swimming again in January. I know swim 1K of front crawl (40 lengths) 3 x week. I have dropped a size & my stomach is so much flatter.

Some of the munchies thing may well just be thirst. Try having a good drink of water after your swim. You may not feel thirsty but you are probably a bit dehydrated.

I always thought swimming is better for toning up than for weight loss. I mean, it is still an aerobic workout so definitely has benefits for losing weight, I just always considered it more for toning up.

I don't swim regularly now but have done in the past, and I was often sore all over the next day.

Mrswellyboot · 14/04/2014 11:44

I started swimming in pregnancy - a lot. I got my figure back quickly after birth and ten pound more (six months post birth) I have found my skin toned up at lot. I was a large 14 now 12 fits.

I think it reduces cellulite and the main thing is, if you are more likely to go swimming than the gym - go swimming. At least you are enjoying it and going regularly.

Mrswellyboot · 14/04/2014 11:46

I do 50 laps four times a week and walk with the baby as much as I can (six week pg again so determined not to balloon as much as last time)

It's excellent for toning all over and low Impact on joints. However to burn fat you are better to do HIIT (high impact interval training). Swim two slow length at a leisurely pace then swim one length at a sprint. Repeat sets of this 5 times. Here is a link to explain whythis method of training is better to burn fat and ultimately lose weight. www.builtlean.com/2010/06/04/high-intensity-interval-training-hiit-best-cardio-to-burn-fat/

Can also be adapted for other cardiovascular exercise like running or cycling

Philoslothy · 14/04/2014 11:58

I swim every day, I see it more as a toning exercise than for weightloss. I run and do other exercise to maintain my weight.

Thank you everyone for giving me good tips.
