Vitamin C can help prevent Asthma and Cystic fibrosis.

My father just emailed me a press release from the researchers that he works with. Thought you would all be interested.

Oakland, CA- Researchers at Children?s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland have found that Vitamin C plays an important role in normal airway function, may prevent symptoms associated airway diseases such as cystic fibrosis and asthma, and may even help alleviate the dry cough suffered by smokers. The findings of the Children?s researchers are a first step toward evaluation of vitamin C as a drug candidate and therapeutic agent in the complementary treatment of asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive lung disease.

In the study, published in the first March issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and communicated by Prof. Bruce Ames, the Children?s researchers found that low levels of vitamin C may play a role in the progression of common inflammatory airway diseases. Inflammatory airway diseases obstruct breathing and can literally leave patients gasping for breath.

It goes on to say:

?When the airway is not sufficiently hydrated, it becomes susceptible to infections, which may eventually cause asthma attacks in asthmatics, ? said Illek. ?Increased intake of vitamin C may loosen those sticky airway secretions and improve clearance in the respiratory tract. Vitamin C may prove to be an effective, safe and low-cost treatment to improve current therapies, including bronchodilators, anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics.?

Isn't "prevent" might be a bit strong where CF is concerned?

tamum · 18/03/2004 19:58

I agree, zebra, though I guess that's not actually what the reserachers are saying. The press release looks pretty misleading to be honest (not that there's anything unusual in that). They are suggesting in the paper that administration of highish doses of vitamin C by inhalation may improve airway function in CF, but they haven't demonstrated that in the paper. There are no results on asthma in the paper, just speculation based on other findings of low levels of vitamin C in asthmatics. Basically, it's important for anyone reading this to realise that giving oral doses of vitamin C won't help CF. Sorry SofiaAmes, not getting at you.

hmb · 18/03/2004 20:02

Prevent is impossible where CF is concerned until we can do genetic modification of gametes.

SofiaAmes · 18/03/2004 21:06

They are suggesting that it helps prevents the symptoms of cf, not the actual disease. I think that you are overstating it tamum when you say that "anyone reading this to realise that giving oral doses of vitamin C won't help CF." That's not true. There seems to be clear evidence (particularly on the cellular level) that vitamin C may help with the symptoms of cf. Obviously further research needs to be done, there is no reason not to take high doses of vit. c, and lots of evidence that it may help with a variety of ailments, including asthma and cf.

I thought that excess Vitamin C was excreted in the urine, as we can't store it?

Slinky · 18/03/2004 21:11

Hmb, you're right - Vit C is one vitamin that the body cannot store and so needs regular doses.

tamum · 18/03/2004 21:42

No, I'm not overstating it at all. This is what the authors themselves say:
"Based on the fact that the ASL is deficient in vitamin C during chronic inflammatory disorders of the airways, it appears prudent to supplement the ASL with vitamin C. Unfortunately plasma vitamin C concentrations do not exceed 90 µM even at high oral doses of >1 g (33). Therefore, local delivery of vitamin C to the airway lumen via inhalation may be more advantageous, because this route will yield considerably higher concentrations at the target tissue."
There is no evidence, here or anywhere, to suggest that taking vitamin C orally will help at all. hmb and Slinky are right.

Slinky · 18/03/2004 21:54

I currently take (have done for last year or so) Seven Seas Advanced Formula Multibionta supplements. Just checked on label - contains 60mg (100%RDA) of Vitamin C.

Last summer and this fortnight I have had a really s**ty time with my asthma (although bit excited today as my peak flow is now 450 - up from 380 last Wednesday )

I also seem to recall a while back that they were warning against taking high doses of Vitamin C.

SofiaAmes · 18/03/2004 21:59

tamum, there is a difference between saying that vitamin c "wont" help and "may not" help.
There is plenty of evidence all over medical research to indicate that vitamin c can help with a vast variety of ailments. And this particular study says that vitamin c can hlep, but unfortunately not in the amounts that can be absorbed orally. That does not mean that it is not a good idea to take supplemental vitamin c pills until such time that they do figure out how to add the vitamin c to the inhalers. This is not such a difficult thing to do and the possibilities can give hope to people suffering from asthma and cf. Why would you want to take that hope away? Or encourage people not to take vitamin supplements when there is so much evidence that they can be beneficial. Since our body can't store vitamin c (and other vitamins), there seems to be a good argument for taking supplements, just in case you haven't eaten enough oranges in any one day.

I said that taking oral doses of vitamin C won't help CF, and I stand by that. It's irresponsible to suggest that it will. Far from wanting to take people's hope away, I would certainly love to hear of anything that help my ds's asthma. But this isn't it.

hmb · 18/03/2004 23:35

If you take vitamin c supplements you will just make sure that you have nice, metabolite rich urine. As long as you have a reasonable diet there is no real benefit to taking the tablets. Why give false hope to people? To my mind that just reduces the trust that people have in scientific research

SofiaAmes · 18/03/2004 23:53

Because a vast majority of people do not have a reasonable diet.

hmb · 18/03/2004 23:55

Then much better that they should be encouraged to eat a balanced diet, and get all the other benefits that go with it.

hmb yes it would be much better, but back to the real world...it doesn't work and is far more expensive to do.
I don't remember the figures, but some very large portion of the poor in the usa and the uk are malnutritioned, showing low levels in all sorts of basic vitamins and minerals.

well, I'm off to buy dp some oranges (he's asthmatic and suffers from terrible sinus problems)

senorpostrophe

I'm asthmatic and my father asks me everytime we talk whether I'm taking a multivitamin.

Robinw, I bought some Xylitol in sugar form(9.99 for 500g tub?) and I mixed some with cooled boiled water and 'snorted' it. Not a wonderful sensation but i did it a few times and it helped my sinuses loads. I also take a bit to help keep sore throats at bay as I'm prone to them. Plus, I chew orbit gum with xylitol and give my 6 yr old it to chew cos it's been proven to repair cavities. I hope there's more research into it soon as I swear by it. It just makes me wonder if drug companies block such research as they'd lose loads of money if it proves to be as good as we think.

that's where I bought it from btw
