Hi guys....I STILL can't make my mind up whether to have DS vacinated with prevenar..Are there any Mums - especially in US and countries where its been going for a while now- who can re-assure me? Or warn me otherwise?

I had my DD and DS vacinated after reading Amy Jade's thread on her DD dying of meningitis. There are 2 injections which are spaced at least 28 days apart. I would recommend it for peace of mind. Would also recommend the chicken pox vaccine as well.

I had ds done while we were temporarily living in the US for 6 months. He had three jabs for it in that time though the normal course is 4 over a year or more I believe. The Paed said that that was enough to give him good protection as in the past they had sometime given 3 injections only instead of 4. As far as I was concerend meningitis is so awful, there was no way I wasn't going to take the opportunity to get the vaccinations done while we were there.

NB - the paed in the US also said that the Men C vaccine that we have in the UK is less well tested then the prevnar one which he highly recommended. I think the Men C one was introduced in the UK as a bit of a knee jerk reaction to some outbreaks we had here a while ago. They don't give the Men C in the US. MInd you ds has had that one done too in the UK.

My ds has 2 doses (high risk group), one in October last year and again in January. He was and has been absolutely fine. We are now just trying to get him an appt for his pnuemovax. I was also told that these are more stringently tested thatn some of the other vaccine routinely given to our kids.

jabberwocky · 22/08/2006 20:11

I have always been very wary of vaccines, but we definitely went with the prevnar. I read up quite a bit on it beforehand and IIRC it protects against the 7 most common strains of meningitis that are not covered by Hib.

We also did the chicken pox vaccine. I know it is much more common to do so here in the US rather than in the UK, but not only can some cases of chicken pox be quite severe, getting the vaccine provides the additional protection for shingles, which is the same virus.

Spongebob, have a look at this website www.meningitis.org they have all the info you need on the pneumococcal vaccines they even have a helpline so give them a call if you are still unsure.
Dd1 story is under case studies.

eidsvold · 23/08/2006 07:14

My dd1 was able to have the prevenar here in Aus although it was not given routinely. She fell in the high risk category and so we made sure she had it.

They have since introduced the vacc for all babies and we made sure dd2 had her lot as well.
