Scarlet Fever

Has anybody's little ones been diagnosed with Scarlet Fever recently? I'm not happy with my trainee doctors diagnosis of my two year old ("It's a virus"). Everything I've read points to Scarlet Fever and I wanted to know if it's doing the rounds as apparently it's spread rather easily. I live in the Morayshire area.

ds had it a few years back. It is associated with Strep Throat (otherwise often identified as a bacterial throat infection such as Tonsillitis), detectable by throat swab. What symptoms seem to indicate Scarlet fever to you ?

My ds came out of hospital sunday, he had been in 4 days. It is scarlett fever and they let it get really bad due to incompitence of local doctor so he had to be admitted. Still really poorly. I live in west sussex tho so not near you. If it is then poor child, my little one has been really laid low with it.

Hello Lizs
Symptoms are: Rash on face, chest, back, neck, behind ears, groin and inner thighs. This is fine, pink and feels like sandpaper. Vomiting, temprature, bright red cheeks. Loss of appetite, bright red tongue and mouth (can't manage to see down throat). D is a little brighter today but going for a second opinion at docs even if they do think I'm a overly fussy mum!

hmm sounds likely then. If it is he'd probably need ab's so worth a 2nd opinion.

My dd had it about march time. The most distinctive feature she had was the "Strawberry tongue" At first it looked like her tongue was covered in thrush, but by the following day it had"Peeled" to reveal a bright "scarlett" tongue covered in bobbles. She had the rash as well and was really poorly. We only got her diagnosed by calling the out of hours badger service in our area, as our doctor was very unhelpful (and had a past history of poorly diagnosing illness!). She was given a 10 day course of antibiotics and it seemed clear up but never truly did, until a reocurrance and a new round of even stronger antibiotics......Search google for more info and Good luck

ds had this and was only poorly for one day.the anti-biotics cleared it up.
it does sound like it to me and def think you should go back to the docs -mums usually know best. bugger the over anxious label!
a yong locum told me that my son was absolutely fine with nothing wrong at all and yet the next day he woke up with yellow pus oozing out of his ears.took him back and saw a proper doc who said'this is a very very poorly child ' and gave him heaps of anti biotics and an another appointment in a week.
you know your child best.
