Hysteroscopy without anaesthetic.

I'm going for a hysteroscopy and biopsy tomorrow. The hospital told me there isn't any need for an anaesthetic for this procedure. Last time I had one a few years ago they gave me a general anaesthetic.

Is it likely to be especially painful or just a bit sore?

Hi. I had one about 2 years ago with only local anaesthetic. Found the injections for the local anaesthetic the worst bit! Quite painful. The actual hysteroscopy wasn't so bad. I watched on the monitor, quite surreal seeing a part of me very few people will get to see!
Can't really remember afterwards all that much but think I had some period type pains and a bit of bleeding but less than a period. (although my periods are heavy)

I've had one. It's ok. The nurses will look after you. It's great afterwards when you can just get on with your life and don't have to recover from an anaesthetic.

I had one without anaesthetic. I was very anxious but it was fine

soundevenfruity · 07/04/2014 23:13

I think you have a choice. Haven't you discussed it at your preop?

NCFTTB · 07/04/2014 23:28

I don't think she'll have had one as no anaesthetic...

FrontForward · 07/04/2014 23:44

Our hosp does a one stop clinic where you attend for OPD and this can be done at the same time. No pre op. You can refuse and there was certainly no pressure on me

I had one without any anaesthetic. The Doc said as I'd had children I could obvioulsy cope with the pain (:0). It hurt me. Not fainting hurt but uncomfortable hurt. I'd take painkillers before you go and have some ready for after. It stopped really hurting after 30 mins, and I had mild period pains for a few days after.

I've had four children - three at home without any pain relief, so I didn't think I would have problem. When I had this procedure, it hurt so much that the doctor had to stop before she had enough to biopsy. I did not appreciate being told that I made too much of a fuss and it was just a "little pinch". I bled for about a week afterwards.

Thanks all, I was very lucky that it didn't hurt at all and the nurses were lovely. And I got to watch my innards on the monitor. Have to go back to have some polyps whipped out. Still bleeding and crampy.

I couldn't look at the screen. Glad you found if ok. Why couldn't they remove the polyps at the time though?

PicandMinx · 09/04/2014 18:33

Well done OP - you were brave to look!!

LydiasLunch · 09/04/2014 20:30

They need to do that under general anaesthetic apparently. So they will write to me. It was interesting and gruesome seeing the polyps :)

How many were there? I think I may have another one but hoping not!

LydiasLunch · 09/04/2014 20:53

Two, I think they said.

Maybe that's why you need a general. I've got all the symptoms of a polyp but going to bury my head in the sand for a bit longer and see what happens!

LydiasLunch · 18/04/2014 07:42

NCFTTB, don't do that. I had the results of my biopsy yesterday and they've found precancerous cells in the polyp. I have to have a full hysterectomy and I'm relieved they caught it early. Go get it checked x
