extremely big and painful mouth ulcer - any tips?

I bit the inside of my cheek a week ago - not that badly - but now have the worst ulcer I have ever had. I have tried Bonjela (just made worse, and seemed to get bigger) and gargling soluble aspirin. It is HUGE and very painful - it has an angry red line around the edge and all the area around is feels inflamed.

owwwwwwwwww.

Any tips please?

If you can bear it, dispense with toothpaste for a few days: just brush your teeth with water, three times per day, and rinse with corsodyl. Or at the very least, massively reduce the amount of toothpaste you use, because the foaming agents will keep it feeling raw and inhibit healing. Corsodyl tastes utterly vile, but it's really good for healing infections.

I've been plagued with super-ulcers for years and found the only thing that works at all is rinsing with Corsodyl as many times as you can in a day until the ulcer clears up and for a couple of days after. The foaming agent in toothpaste is called Sodium Laurel Sulphite (sp?) and isn't in Sensodyne Pronamel so I've found that's the best to use.

you can get a bonjela that you 'paint over' the sore with, which coats it in a film.

Horispondle DS (in his 30's) was also plagued with mouth ulcers & also avoids toothpaste with SLS and has stopped using nurofen or any other of the ibuprofen based medecines & he is no longer having this problem. It was on the advice of his GP - it's a known reaction to the drug.

I'd go to the dentist. If you bit your mouth then this sounds like something other than an ulcer. I had something similar on the roof of my mouth and was prescribed soluble steroids. I thought it was just a really bad ulcer but I was told I had damaged my mouth, perhaps with a bit of food.

Thanks so much all for your advice! I do appreciate it.

Off to buy some corsodyl, and will avoid toothpaste as cleaning teeth is extremely painful.

Interesting about Ibuprofen - I always use aspirin (and swilled the ulcer in it!) - won't be doing that again
