Croup - can't get temp down, refusing fluids 3 year old

threebob · 20/08/2006 20:27

Ds has had croup last two nights. Temp ranging from 38.8- 40.1 (and that's on maximum paracetamol and nurofen given exactly on time).

He won't drink anything now. We saw doctor yesterday morning, our doctor opens in an hour. He is currently asleep (more like delerious - but his eyes are closed and he seem peaceful).

It complicated by the fact that he is allergic to colourings so giving him paediatric drugs is difficult, so I would like to wait to see our own GP who will not have to have this explained to him. But am I being silly waiting an hour?

my son suffers with croup. had it 3 nights in a row 2 weeks ago, turned into chest infection, had high temp and then pneumonia. worst time ever.

how his breathing and chest?

throckenholt · 20/08/2006 20:31

if he is not having problems breathing you are probably ok. I think croup tends to only last a couple of days - so you are probably past the worst of that - but the bug that is causing the constriction and the temperature still sounds like it could do with help.

Hope he gets better soon.

He has paracetamol suppositories. The nurofen syrup has no colour and is sweetened with maltitol - which he can have.

If he needs steroids they would have to be injected.

His chest was clear yesterday morning - but that was yesterday morning...

No breathing problems, as long as he stays calm. If he gets panicky then he draws his chest and gasps for air and it's awful.

have you got him to the dr yet? how is he?

threebob · 21/08/2006 00:50

Just spent 3 hours at the Dr under observation. He has had steroids and has no stridor any more. Still very high temp. but they did persuade him to drink.

Hopefully he will come right soon.

Hi 3bob, just to say thinking of you and B. hope all is under control now! DS had similar about 2wks ago and nothing would bring temp down at all. I ended up syringing water into him, though he is smaller than your ds and was too weak to put up a fight!! Temps for ds lasted for 4 days going between 38-41. Was 41 at doctors and they sent us home!!!!

threebob · 21/08/2006 02:48

Explosive diarrhoea was a nice side symptom just now! He will drink chocolate soy milk and eat soy icecream, so he is looking a bit better.

2 nights without sleep have cured me of any urge to have another!

know what you mean dh and I have been trying for no2 and I was questioning my sanity when ds was ill, he was absolutely wretched with it!

threebob · 21/08/2006 04:00

More exploding bottom and ds looking very surprised and wretched. Dh has taken him back down to the Doctors to be looked over again.

I think he has 2 illnesses, he's never had croup with a temperature before, or been ill during the day with it.

All his little friends have chicken pox - how does that start?

OP posts:
yawningmonster · 21/08/2006 04:14

when ds had c/p he had the classic cold/flu like thing first but no croup so like you say he may have two unrelated issues especially with the back end exploding too!! If it is c/p ds only got 12 spots in total when he had it so I will cross fingers thta B. doesn't get a bad dose if that is on it's way

eidsvold · 21/08/2006 06:17

3-bob - can you get hydralyte there in NZ - they do a liquid but also do ice lollies and we use those with dd1 when she is not taking liquid and we are worried about her hydration.

Hope you get some answers - sorry to hear he is feeling so poorly.

eidsvold · 21/08/2006 06:18

chicken pox for dd1 started with spots and then was horrendously puky for a day or so - no sleep etc.

threebob · 21/08/2006 06:30

I would imagine that it has either colourings or sweeteners in it - the ones we have certainly do and the Doctor has never offered despite giving it to friends children for the mildest tummy bug - so I imagine he is sparing our feelings that there is something we could give - but we can't.

Temp. now 40, coughing all the time and very sad little boy.

yawningmonster · 21/08/2006 09:23

hugs to B. would he suck on an ice lollie if you made one from friendly ingredients? (I put a rocket sticker on the plunger I was using with ds and told him it was special rocket water and he seemed to come around to the idea (in fact now he is better whenever he remembers he asks for "ockie ater" I also found when the fever was really aggressive keeping him in the bath was the only way of keeping him cool, just loaded up with toys, bubbles etc

CarlyP · 21/08/2006 11:07

thinknig or your little man, its not nice when they are so ill. hoping he improves soon.

cx

threebob · 21/08/2006 22:06

He's a lot more lively today - still no eating, temp of 38.5, chatting away but still getting very upset if things don't go the way he expects.

I got more sleep last night as he only woke up when his pain relief wore out!

Still over 38, but happier in himself. Finding even eating a couple of peas exhausting. I got out the pram (not used it for over a year) and took him out to post a letter as I was going crazy stuck indoor. Just sitting and watching the world go by wore him out.

DS was wiped out for about a week after he was ill, I think it was the temperatures that did it. He was off his food for about 2weeks before he bounced back to normal. Glad to hear he is on the improve though.
