Sick bug or food allergy? - sorry bit lengthy

I'm trying to work out if my dd was suffering from a sick bug or an allergic reaction to something she had eaten. If the latter I would want to avoid the offending foodstuff in future.

What do you think? - here is what happened:

Yesterday, fine all day - happy temperament. Ate a normal tea. Only thing she ate out of the ordinary was some birthday cake that she had been given. It was some shop bought 'Thomas the tank engine' type cake with lots of thick, vibrant colour gloopey blue icing.

About 1.5 hours after tea at 19.00 was a bit sick, followed by violently sick at 20.00 and violently sick at 20.20. Pretty much cleared her stomach contents that time so when sick again at 23.00 ish it was saliva and mucus. She seemed really poorly.

This morning avoided given her brekkie, but gave her water (which she kept down) and later milk which she kept down. She seemed really perky and normal so I've given her lunch...she didn't eat much of it (but that can be normal for her)....and overall she seems - touch wood - to be fully recovered.

She has not had a runny bum or temperature....but she does have a heavy cold and runny nose at the moment. I can't decide whether it was a bug or not (if it was, it was shortlived)...there has been one going around her Day Nursery but that was almost a fortnight ago.

Do you think it might have been the food colouring in the cake icing that did it? The reason I am concerned is that if it was and she reacted that badly to it, perhaps it could be worse next time (anaphalactic shock? - yes I know I am neurotic)

Any thoughts?

Those cakes can be quite sickly though can't they.

I would say it was probably a bug though. It is going around my ds had it for a week, but dd was only sick once and then fine the next day.

MY DS was violently sick in the night a couple of times last Wednesday night. Was fine in the morning and kept his milk and breakfast down so I sent him to nursery. A few hours later he had a very high temperature and a rash which the doctor said was a virus. Probably linked to the vomitting.

Could be a virus. Would get a list of ingredients in the icing if I were you and check them all out for possible allergic reactions. If any of them are potential allergens you could always get you GP to refer her for a proper allergy test to be sure.

sounds like a bug to me.

I think it's probably a bug, esp if there were no other symptoms. My son was very allergic to milk and twice had anaphylactic reactions where he vomited and passed out.. but he's also prone to vomiting for nothing much either and feels poorly (ucky ooky tummy is what we call it) until his stomach settles. Usually it has to do with too many chips or sickly sweets.

It's bound to be a bug, I think you are worrying too much about things. Although kids do react to food colouring or e-numbers it is usually over a period of time and makes them hyper not sick.

We have a terrible bug going round here at the mo - that rotavirus thing I think. My entire family had it last week and I have never been so sick in my life - but it did only last 24 hrs. Does sound similar to your dd. My Ds had it as well and didn't get temp - just sick.

Thanks all - probably a bug then - a very virulent but thankfully short one. I expect I'm incubating it currently...can't wait!!!

Well, it appears that it could be heading to SW london. DS was fine at bedtime, then woke up half an hour later complaining of a tummy ache. Half an hour later he went to the loo and vomited all over the bathroom carpet (so badly that I've had to pull it up and bin it). Since then he's been sick about four times - mainly bile. My only concern is that he's been on cefalexin antibiotics for a very sore throat (as I have) for the past three days - and I'm not sure if he's having a bad reaction to that, or whether he's got another bug on top of everything. Throat cleared up within a day or so of antibiotic (so don't think it's that that is causing him to vomit) but it's a five day course. Anyway, won't give him any more until I've been advised by the doctor. Feel so sorry for him, he's waking up every half an hour or so, wretching violently and then going back to sleep. Plus, it's his bestfriend's birthday party tomorrow AND we were then going to stay the weekend with other friends. He was so looking forward to everything.
