tonsilitis...how does it start?

How do you recognise tonsilitis?

think my 3 yo may have it. says his mouth hurts at the back, he screamed when i put the thermometer in his ears. he has only a slight temp but feels like he is burning up when you touch him. one min he says he is hot, the next he is shivering.

could this be tonisilitis? i remember having it as a child but have only the recollection of feeling really sh*t!

sorry if there are multiple threads, thought maybe i would get a reply quicker than i could search

I remember having it once and the doctor asking me to stay for the day to save on his heating bill!!
I used to get a sore throat first but as I was older got to recognise the symptoms before it got too late and got antibiotics quickly

whoopsfallenoveragain · 19/08/2006 21:34

ooh and if you can get to look does his throught look like it is covered in white spots?
that is another sign of tonsilitus

MerlinsBeard · 19/08/2006 21:39

he won;t open his mouth wide enough for me, makes him cry out loud IYSWIM which makes it hurt which makes him cry even more

Hes just had some medised so if it is tonsilitis he is being heped and if its not then he will still get some sleep (as will the rest of us!)

what are the symptoms whoops? does it sound like it to you? my pc is achingly slow today

It sounds like it could be all they say now is to take paracetamol and ibroprofen.
I laways found it hard to swallow too so don't be suprised if he starts dribbling!

In my experience, a very high temperature is usually present with tonisillitis, and not necessarily any throat pain. He may have an infection in his throat which may or may not require antibiotics. I'd give calpol and nurofen every couple of hours or so to try to keep the pain at bay, and offer lots of fluids to keep his throat lubricated. would suggest taking him to docs asap in case he needs antibiotics (not that it sounds serious, but just to stop your ds being in pain!) hope this helps. ps I'm not a doctor but have had lots of bad throat/tonsilitis with my 2 LOs. hope he feels better soon x

Poor little guy, this is horrid. Symptoms are temperature, fluey achey feeling, red tonsils with white spots, pain on swallowing. He might have an ear infection rather than tonsilitis, although very often one can cause pain in the other even if they are not both infected. Try giving him ice lollies if you have any, or ice cream as this will soothe his throat and get some fluid into him, as well as cooling him down. Def. do the calpol/nurifen thing. My dd2 gets tonsilitis and our GP gives antibiotics when her throat has white spots, so it would be worth a trip to the emergency GP tomorrow. Some GPs do a swab to see if the bacteria is strep.

MerlinsBeard · 19/08/2006 21:58

i managed to load the nhs direct page. does sound like it could be the start of it. am lucky to get this far without him being ill (other than one incident of sickness!)
Thanks for that. he's had medised to help him sleep so he doesn't wake his bro up so will swap for ibuprofen and calpol if he needs it later on. don't think u can mix medised and calpol can you??

No idea, never used medised, sorry!

MerlinsBeard · 19/08/2006 22:03

just to add, i am not panicing, just trying to be prepared! he may be fine in the morning!

have got ice pops, cars (the movie) ones which he doesn't know about so taht will perk him up if he needs it. imagine the additives will give hima little prep too

Sounds like what I've just had which was/is Strep Throat. I'd get it checked out. It's blooming painful and I'm on a 10 day course of penicillin

nearlythree · 19/08/2006 22:10

I panic every time our kids get ill, it's so stressful and upsetting, so it wouldn't matter if you were!

MerlinsBeard · 19/08/2006 22:13

what is strep throat?

OP posts:
nearlythree · 19/08/2006 22:15

It's tonsilitis caused by streptoccocus B, (I think). It can have rare complications which is why some GPs test for it.

nearlythree · 19/08/2006 22:18

The complication is rheumatic fever but it's soooooooo rare, and antibiotics would stop it anyway.

Nemo1977 · 19/08/2006 22:27

DS had tonsilitis at 12mths. He had a high temp, was really lethargic and un iterested and cried if we tried to give him anything to drink etc. He was given antibiotics. If he is saying throat hurting etc then would take him to walk in centre in the morning or something.

LIZS · 19/08/2006 22:31

Could be any number of throat and /or ear infections. Swollen glands in neck due an infection may cause the throat and swallowing pain. Worth getting checked out if he is no better tomorrow.

MerlinsBeard · 19/08/2006 22:31

will see how he is 2mo. DP away and nearest nhs walk in place is at Manchester Airport!! (2 buses and a total of about an hour/hour and a half journey, more coz its sunday) emergancy dr doesn't ocme out round here, you have to go to them which is only after 9 if they have time, they say go to hosp if u desp need to see someone.
soo, will see how he goes 2mo and take it from there.

Thank you for replies

When I was in a&e with dd2 there was a little chap in the next cubicle with tonsilitis. If you think he needs seeing, take him - the hospital won't mind! (and hopefully he won't anyway!)
