Glucose load 7.8, any advice

Hi All,
Just got back from seeing midwife, and my glucose load result was 7.8. The midwife said they start to worry of it is higher than 8, so I'm pretty close to them being concerned about it. Also she was asking if there's any history of diabetes in my family which there isn't. Apart from keeping away from sweet things, does anyone have any advice? I have a pretty healthy diet, although I do have a bit of an issue with very dark chocolate

I got carted of for a glucose tolerance test after having a similar result from a blood test. My blood was taken approx 2 hours after a carb laden breakfast of porridge and toast so I wasn't overly suprised about the result. DH is diabetic so we were able to keep an eye on what my blood sugar levels were doing and My GTT was fine. Had you eaten before having your blood taken as this will affect it and make it on the higher side depending what/when you had previously eaten. Have a read of the GI diet and read the bit on carbs as this will help you understand more about how your blood sugar is affected by them.

How do you feel? My glucose level was a bit lower than that after my GTT and I had very definite gestational diabetes. But I felt AWFUL - tired, but couldn't sleep, so thirsty I was choking with it, etc.

Might be worth having a glucose tolerance test.

Don't worry though - I was fine once I stopped eating sugary things (I found white pasta and white rice were terrible things for my sugar levels - as was granary bread, but wholemeal was fine - pasta too).

very dark chocoalt eis fine, I think you'll find there's very little sugar in it. Steer clear of all starchy carbs including sugar - white bread, white pasta, white rice and go for the high fibre equivalent, wholemeal or seed bread, new potatoes rather than big old ones, basmati or brown rice.

Basically anything with a low to medium GI rating.

Thanks for replies , was thinking about having a look at a GI diet book, initially thought it was more about common sense, but really think it would help. Thanks for tips. I feel generally fine although have felt really tired this pregnancy, and am often thirsty although not painfully so. I've always had problems with blood sugar levels since being young, big crashes and feeling very faint if I didn't eat regularly enough, but I haven't really noticed highs until the last couple of years.
Didn't have ahuge carb laden lunch or anything before test, although the blood was taken about ten minutes after finishing a bottle of lucozade.
Hunkermunker, how come you had gestational diabetes even though your glucose level was lower than 7.8??
Also sorry but I'm not that up on the terms here, is GTT glucose tolerance test? If so, I sort of though that was what I'd had, as I was made to drink the lucozade before hand. Hmmmmmm.

luosade could have had a massive effect of glucose test - it is liquid sugar and quickly absorbed - not part of the GI diet!!

hunkermunker · 19/08/2006 21:10

Did you have two blood tests, with the lucozade in between them? Then yes, that's a glucose tolerance test.

My level was (I think - it's on here somewhere probably) just over 6 fasting and just over 7 post lucozade - but I definitely had GD - and felt heaps better once I cut the sugary stuff out of my diet.

LittleMonkeysMum · 20/08/2006 21:34

No, I had to drink the lucozade and they tested 10 mins later, but no test before. The results are listed as Glucose Load. Very odd, as sj points out of course the lucozade is going to push the levels up considerably, and they can't be testing tolerance if they don't test when it's normal before the lucozade. They did the same in my last pregnancy and I have no idea what the results were although it was never mentioned to me that there may be an issue.
I'm going to request a glucose tolerance test tomorrow.
HM, I've cut out refined carbs (and sadly chocolate and my illicit occasional shandy!) out over the last couple of days and also feel less tired. Thanks for help

littlemonkeysmum, I've had GD twice now and it's a pain to follow the diet, but it's cleared up each time as soon as the baby was born, and as a very faint silver lining you put on much less weight during the pregnancy than normal.
How many weeks are you? the GTT is normally done at 28 weeks automatically round here, and they pick up earlier signs through the urine samples. tbh 7.8 shortly after drinking lucozade doesn't sound excessive, i got caught out 2 hours after eating the tiniest piece of flapjack last time...
Ask for the test and get them to explain all the different scores and how they'll monitor you.
Try not to worry too much.
and boy, did I eat a bucket load of chocolates after DS2 was born

LittleMonkeysMum · 21/08/2006 23:02

Thanks pepperrabbit, I'm seeing consultant at hospital this week about something else so will take that info too. Brilliant cheers!
