Terrible eczema that doesn't itch

I'm new to mumsnet and I wish I'd known about it when my kids were smaller as a couple of recent threads have reassured me about things I worried about at the time. For example...

DD2 is now 7 and her eczema has cleared (although she now has asthma) but I would be very interested to hear if anyone had/has a baby/child with terrible eczema that does not itch.

Dd 2 had strange blotchy skin from birth and eczema from 5 weeks. She looked awful - crusty, red, dry, seeping skin, regular skin infections, some strangers thought she'd had a burns accident. We had regular appointments with doctors at the hospital's dermatology unit... but the eczema never bothered my dd and she never scratched!

The consultants never believed us when we said she didn't itch, until dd was 3 and could tell them herself.

I realise how fortunate we were as the itching is the very worst thing about eczema. But has anyone else experience of this?

Have you tried Allergenics cream? My daughter started out with baby eczema and we were given the usual aquaeous cream and told to get on with it. It just got worse and moved from behind the knees and in creases to her face, feet and stomach. My sister-in-law saw Allergenics on This Morning programme as her daughter's eczema was on the verge of turning really sore. She bought the baby bath milk, shampoo and cream and within 4 months it had cleared up. It took 13 weeks for my daughters to clear completely, and if she gets an occassional break out I go back to using it and it clears in a week to 10 days.

You can buy this at independent chemists and Holland and Barrett - I hope this helps.

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer - eczema is not a problem for my dd now. It cleared up completely when she was about 6, maretta,(she's nearly 8 now). We used all sorts of combinations of moisturisers, steroid creams, anti-fungal, antibiotic etc etc for years.

I just wondered if anyone else has come across atopic eczema (as diagnosed by medical professionals)that doesn't itch?

Hi!

My ds, who is 2, has a mixture of eczema's. The type he gets on his arms, doesn't it, but the stuff he gets on the back of his neck, tops of his legs & thighs and base of his back itches like crazy.

PinkTulips · 18/08/2006 17:55

dd has a patch of eczema on the back of her head since she was a couple of months old, she never scratches at it though so i presume it doesn't itch.

for anyone else reading this thread for advice though i just want to second shelby's recommendation of Allergenics... it keeps dd's completely under control and dp who has had severe eczema since his teens which even the steroid creams don't control has found it to be amazingly effective as well, just a few days use combined with a good moisturiser like E45 body lotion completely cleared his for the first time in years.

No kiddies with non itchy eczema but I have a patch on my leg that's pretty bad but has never itched - does crack and get sore sometimes though so even if you have a child that doesn't itch it's still a good idea to treat it to prevent discomfort.

Yes, I have experience of this to a point - dd has mild eczema (daily moisturinzing since 3 months old, and occasional, usually one-off, mildest steroid cream). She never ever itched her eczema patches, up until the age of about 2.4 - now she's 2.8, and gets tiny patches occasionally which she does itch a bit. Also, its now in more conventional places like inside elbows, behind knees, when she does get it - whereas before it was in odd places on her leg, back and sometimes tummy.
I'm glad your dd's has cleared up!

That's interesting, elibean. Dd's eczema was never in conventional places either. Her back and face were awful (and her arms, legs on and off)but not the inside elbows/knees bits.
