Low iron, low folate, low B12. Diet ideas?

I don't really feel like I have a bad diet but clearly I do. I have been a veggie for a while so this is not good. What can I eat? I thought my diet was reasonable but obviously not. I have cereal or yoghurt and granola for breakfast, cheese salad sandwich or soup for lunch and usually some sort of pasta and sauce, veg chilli or curry for tea.

I don't eat much fruit but eat veg. I do eat too many sweet things though.

What are easy sources of the missing minerals?

I had this problem a few months ago and was low on all of the above. I had, had a baby 6 month previously , lost a lot of blood and was breastfeeding. Have you had any children recently? Sometimes it just takes your bOdy ages to catch up.

It was completely dietary on my part and I started lookin into what I was eating and looking at the levels provided in the fruit or veg I did choose and discovere I was choosing foods with minimum amounts.

I started eating lots of broccoli with my meals as food high in iron. I was back to having normal levels within 4 weeks.

What did your gp say?

Cook in a cast iron skillet, green leafy veg such as spinach. Nuts, pulses, beans, eggs.

B12 is harder as it's not naturally found in plant food but marmite/vegemite is a great source and a lot of cereals, milk, breads are fortified with it.

No had kids 4 yrs ago but don't think I ever recovered! GP gas given me iron tablets but says I need to work on my diet.

Being low in all of these (and vitamin D as well) comes as standard with auto-immune thyroid disease, which in its turn is allied to coeliac disease. if you are presenting with this bundle of deficiencies, your GP should be looking to rule out those two and their close friend pernicious anaemia.

My thyroid was fine as he tested this. I have wondered about coeliac in the past. Maybe I will go back. Thanks.

ask what your thyroid result was

Lagoonablue · 28/03/2014 22:16

Actually I am convincing myself it is coeliac now. I have intermittent bouts of gut pain and soft stool , also wind problems. Blood test also showed low calcium.

My diet isn't that bad! Think will return to GP.
