Teething Troubles - won't eat or sleep

Can anyone suggest anything please? My DD is 15 months and has 4 teeth through - they came through very late. About another 6 seem to be coming through and she is in so much discomfort. She has a raised temperature, reduced appetite and slightly swollen lips. She has gone from an independant, 12 hour+ sleeper baby that will eat anything in great quantities to a clingy unsettled baby that won't eat and I feel so sorry for her. Does anyone have any tried and tested remedies or tips for me please?

Have you given her Calpol for the temperature? There are quite a few teething gels like Bonjela that might help too

Hi Compo, yes thank you, we have tried Medised, Calpol and Nurofen as well as the Gels and some powders from Boots. She'd had Medised, Nurofen and Gel and powder (and 3 helpings of milk!) last night and was still yelling. She is improved today but am sure another bout is round the corner...

I found with DS that he would prefer to eat cool, soft things. Like yogurt, then would eat a bit more after that. Contrary to all other things I heard / read that you should give them hard things, he seemed to do better on soft -- so usually didn't eat meat. But pasta, peas, steamed veg, yogurts & ice cream he would.

If you have access to the States, they have a great teething gel (oragel) which works differentlly to the UK versions (which are based on a pain reliever which needs to soak in) as it works on contact, slightly numbing it. It helped both mine sleep at night.

Hi, thanks for your message. We have been trying what you suggested instead of all the things recommended like carrot sticks and biscuits and it has been very successful! I've actually used the hand blender to blend some of her meals and the relief on her face was both upsetting and wonderful! She's eating chilled custard and yogurt and rice pudding too as well as lots of soft dried fruit like apricots. Re the Orajel, Bonjela have just released a new product called Bonjela Cool with the anaesthetic in it and though it stings at first it works a treat, and is readily available from pharmacies. Here's to sleep again!
