Prevenar - has your child had it?

My DS is 2. Last winter he had a bad chest infection which took a while to clear up. My GP has given me the option to let him have Prevenar vaccine. Naturally I want to protect him against pneumonia and bacterial meningitis...however I have read some controversial things about how safe it is...the nasty side effects etc...I dont know what to do. Anyone have any advice please?

my daughter had it when she was between 2 and 3. It is not routine here in Aus but as she is at risk we were able to get it. Her cardiologist recommended it and we had no side effects or reaction at all.

There was a thread by a mum who had lost a little one to meningitis ( from my dim distant memory) if you do a search you may be able to find more info.

try searching using topic Prevnar.

LaDiDaDi · 16/08/2006 23:19

My dd has had it recently as part of her first and second lots of routine ims. She had it to protect her because she was prem. She was actually sort of borderline as to wether she needed it or not but I pushed for her to have it because I have seen children left extremely disabled by pneumococcal meningitis. She has been absolutely fine and I feel loads happier knowing that she has had it. I know that in other countreies it has been one of the routine imms for some time now.

sorry should add it is now part of the vaccination schedule in Aus but it wasn't a couple of years ago.

LaDiDaDi · 16/08/2006 23:21

The mum whos little one died is called amyjade I think. Her dd was called Freya. You could look under the recent thread Pneumococcal vax!?!

Angeliz · 16/08/2006 23:22

There wwas a thread not so long back. here you go

Have yet to research it myself but have it all to come again soon. Haven't even finished with dd2's vaccines yet either

cheeryface · 16/08/2006 23:23

ds2 has had it because he has a low immune sysstem with a poor response to pneumoccocal. He was absolutely fine with it.
did react to mmr though and was quite poorly.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2006 23:23

My 9 month old is having her first Prevenar next month.

DD1 will have Pneumovax at age 3.4 in October.

Pneumoccocal menigitis can have symptoms VERY hard to detect.

It is a killer and a disabler.

Introducing the vaccine for it is LONG overdue in the UK.

LaDiDaDi · 16/08/2006 23:29

Totally agree expat. I wonder if the government delayed introducing it because of the furore over mmr, perhaps they didn't think that the public would accept another immunisation.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2006 23:31

Not at all, Ladi.

The vaccine is about £30/jab.

It was down to cost.

Children's lives just weren't worth £70 or so of jabs, it seems.

LaDiDaDi · 16/08/2006 23:35

That's shocking ! I would have paid for it privately if I hadn't persuaded them to give dd it now.

belgo · 17/08/2006 09:05

I paid for it privatley here is Belgium, I know a little girl who died from pneumococcal septiceamia, and that made my mind up to get it whatever the cost. The vaccine itself cuase messy poos for about a week, although my doctor refused to admit the cause was the vaccine.

Spongebob · 17/08/2006 11:14

Hi guys...thanks for your responses, Ive just found out from the nurse that it will be pneumovax he will have, not prevenar, apparently because hes over 2. Anyones child had that one?

Amyjades little Freya is my niece, when we found out that prevenar existed as you can imagine we were furious.
Because of Freya her cousins have all been given prevenar, i had to pay for my Dd to have it done, its not a live vaccine, therefore she suffered absolutely no side effects.
I will also be taking Dd for the pnemovax shortly, i will also pay for this if i have to.
My other niece was 3 when we lost Freya, she had to have 2 doses of the prevenar, then have the pneumovax at a later date.

I cannot stress enough how important these jabs are.
