Dizzy spells/ Head spinning. What could it be

It started yesterday when I got up at 5.30am. The room started spinning so badly I fell on the
bed. I was ok after a minute. Went back to bed and got up again at about 8 and the room span again.

I was ok this morning.

After tea tonight i was lying in the garden, got up and my head started spinning. Again lasted about 30 seconds.

I Lay down after bathing dd and the room span and again I've just laid down with dd and the room span for 30 seconds or less.

I haven't been drinking lol. Any ideas what it could be and should I go and see the doc do you think

Sounds like vertigo I had this a few weeks ago. Mine was caused by an inner ear infection but there has also been a virus going around that causes it too. Go see your GP. They can give you anti sickness if you are feeling queasy.

Pixiefish · 15/08/2006 09:51

woke up in the middle of the night and was sick. I was also a bit scared as I was dizzy as well. Managed to get back to sleep adn have woken up this morning feeling loads better so hopefully it was the virus that you mentioned tallmummy

pixie-it could also be benign positional vertigo, perfectly harmless but very annoying, where you suffer vertigo attacks on moving the head into different positions, if you get further attacks, ask your gp for an ent referal where they will probably carry out a procedure called the epley manouvre(takes about 10 mins)

jalopy · 15/08/2006 10:12

Could be labyrinthitis, caused by a virus. Very unpleasant condition and can take some time to pass. Get yourself checked at GP. He'll probably prescribe you Stemetil for nausea and dizziness. Poor you!

labs usually lasts for 8 weeks sometimes longer and usually renders the sufferer bed ridden for the first day or so, vestibular suppressant drugs should only be taken in the first week, after which its important to get up and about moving normally to aid compensation.

It happened to me few years ago. It is scary. i woke up as well at 7.00am on the dot with everything spinning around me. I couldnt look up or down. I went to see the doctor who told me it was like vertigo or sea sickness feeling and not much he could do. He gave me actually sea sickness tablets (!!!). It did last for at least 3 weeks...I HATED IT!!!
Maybe you should Have A Drink...

Littlefish · 15/08/2006 14:47

SpaceCadet could be right about benign positional vertigo (bpv). I've just been told by the gp that I've got it! It's really horrible, and quite frightening when it first starts happening.

I was given some tablets to stop the dizziness for a few days.

Next time it flares up, the gp is going to refer me to an ENT consultant to have the thing done that Spacey talked about earlier.

Have you noticed whether it is triggered by certain head movements? Mine is worse when I lean forward and then backwards.

MIne happens when I lie down OR when I get up. Could it be stress I wonder- think I'll have to go to the doc's if it happens again

I've just got over this same thing - dizziness for up to 30 secs but mine was happening randomly when I was walking, sitting, eating, driving etc

Very scared as the onset was so sudden. Dr recommended 1 x Neurofen 400 3x a day for 3 days and a follow up appointment. Lots of tests done for balance and co-ordination and lots of finger prodding around my temples and eyebrows.

Has gone today. But my med records still says not driving until further notice. I have another appointment Friday to follow up this strange dizziness (which Drs were v concerned about) and will get my records amended then.

Hope you fell better soon, its a horrible feeling.

  • DH thinks it may be linked to a recent visit to the flumes/swimming in Bracknall two weeks ago as DH also had itchy ears and it gave DD an ear infection
Pixiefish · 16/08/2006 20:42

I've still got it so am going to go and see the doc's.

I DID have a nasty bout of food poisoning a few weeks ago and have not been right since- had a soret hroat last week and loas of spots atm

pixiefish..how are you now?

Hi!
Got to this thread through google. Started having dizzy spells about couple of weeks ago and since i am also battling PND and anxiety, it has been sending me into a real panic and I am convincing myself that there is something seriously wrong with me. My head just spins for a few seconds usually while I'm sitting down at computer or watching tv. I feel so scared and don't know what to do. It's happening fairly frequently too and as a result, I can feel myself getting more and more anxious.

wrinklytum · 23/08/2006 07:14

Hi there havent read other replies but a few suggestions:
Possible labyrinthitis or ear infection.A drug called stemitil can help with dizziness but would need to check about suitability if you are bfing.
Dehydration? This can cause a drop in blood pressure and lead to faintness and dizziness.Drink loads of water.
Could you be (whispers)pregnant?? I had dizzy spells in early stages of both mine.
Low blood sugar?
Would suggest trip to gps for an MOT.
hth.

buktus · 23/08/2006 07:58

similar things happen to me but it is purely down to having low blood pressure, which cant be treated mine is especially worse after eating and whilst having a period it cant really be treated at young ages as the only medication is steroids and that comes with its own complications. I faint regularly which is a knightmare when u r in the middle of tesco

Kaloo20 · 24/08/2006 12:03

My dizzy spells etc (see earlier post) were not that same type of dizziness felt from having low blood pressure - where you go from sitting to standing and feel dizzy. I have low pressure too :-(

Can report that since the earlier post I am now absolutely fine.

buktus · 25/08/2006 08:37

my blood pressure doesnt just affect me like this i can be sat still and it will just drop i dont have to do any sudden movement glad to hear u r better anyway

Pixiefish · 25/08/2006 08:59
