Is anyone expert on ECG/ECHO abnormalities?

My 16 yr old son has recently been discovered to have high blood pressure caused by kidney scarring (a whole nother story which I wont bother you with at the moment) which he is now on medication for.
His ECG's are showing short pr interval, long qrs duration and inverted t waves which has been interpreted as Left Ventricular strain/hypertrophy, which I believe could be due to the hypertension. However he has just had an ECHO which has been reported as normal. We have an appt at end of month with consultant but I would like to get my head around understanding what is going on.
If the ECHO has come back normal, does this mean he hasnt
got left ventricular strain or have we caught it before it has affected his heart muscle.
Thanks in advance :)

It probably means that the ECG was done with a machine that does an automatic reading.

Is your son quite skinny / lanky by any chance?

ECG looks at the electrical function of your heart, the echo looks at the structure.

If your ds's heart was a central heating radiator the ECG would look at the timer and on/off settings. the echo would tell you if the pipes are in the right place.

Hypertrophy in a 16 year old is virtually unheard of, and you can't have it with a normal echo.
You can have a structurally normal central heating system but a wonky timer.

Inverted T waves are normal in children and abnormal in adults, they normally 'resolve' in adolescence if you are white, but if you have African heritage it can take until you are 30.

Thank you!! I just wanted to get my head around understanding it all as I have a lot of questions for the consultant as you can imagine. He is quite short and stocky to be fair :) He has had many ECGS from Oct (on 3 different machines) till now showing the same thing. He has a lot going on with his kidneys and hopefully these readings are nothing to worry about too much.

The machines should show the same things, they use the same algorithm, but it is based on an adult white male, we used to cut the diagnosis off.

The echo is the thing to go on for structure.

(I am OP :) ) Just for reference if anyone else comes across this post and has similiar symptoms. It turned out the abnormal ecgs had nothing to do with his blood pressure/kidneys and he doesn't have LVH, but he was eventually diagnosed with wolff parkinson white syndrome which is a conduction disorder of the heart and was something he was born with. Awaiting an appointment to see if he needs an ablation to hopefully cure it.
