Lets talk about poo

DS2 (16 months) has never been what u may call regular, he was breastfed until 16 weeks and weaned on fresh fruit and veg that i pureed myself. He has always struggled a little bit but for the last few months he appears constipated. He will strain and strain for a few days and eventually only produce a small amount which isn't hard and will then go on to poo properly albeit with lots of struggling and crying.

However, recently this has all changed again. we are now on day4 of "non production", he has strained anbd strained and has produced marks in his nappies but little else. The pressure he is putting on his bottom is making the area around his anus bleed, and the straining is making him scream in pain. I know that when he does "go" we will have the same cycle over and over again.
Doctors are being useless and have diagnosed lactulose as they say its constipation. Thing is tho, when he does "produce" its soft.(never runny)

I have tried literally everything, more fruit/fibre, less fruit or fibre, sat over a potty of warm water to soften it (even tho its already soft),prunes(he won;t eat them), even tried a few days in a row of chitty meals (macdonalds, greggs) but even that didn't work!

We are ringing up for another DRs appoitnment tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

Sorry its long btw)

how much water does he drink? this seems to be a MAJOR factor in constipation. Even if you can't get him to drink water, just try and get as much fluid into him as possible. Constipation doesn't necessarily have to be 'hard' when it comes out iyswim, I have suffered with struggling to go for days at a time and yet when I do it is as you describe. This hot weather may be making it worse. May be of no use whatsoever, but noticed you'd had no posts yet so at least it will bump. hope things improve.

please keep on at your dr. Yes it could be constipation which little boys are prone to. Increase the fluid levels, blackcurant juice can help but warm. The thing you dont want is it to become a issue with toiletting.

MerlinsBeard · 08/08/2006 09:22

no appointments left today so will have to ring again first thing.

His fluid levels are fine, he drinks lots actually. water, fresh juice, milk, i stopped giving him squash as thought that may contribute.

Will go hunt out some blackcurrant to give that a try. i hadn't even thought of it becoiming an issue for toiletting actually, he is too young so it hadn't crossed my mind

orange juice doesn't work tried it, not tried live bio yoghurt but will do as he is a big yoghurt fan.

He has actually been today (woohoo) but was only a small amount, can't think of a way to describe it but wasn't what i was expecting for the amount of straining been going on

Oh I can totally sympathise my DS has been exactly the same since he was fully weaned at 6 months. We went to the Doctors lots with no joy. It's been better recently after trying lots of different things. This is what works for us.

Plenty of fluids, fruit veg etc. We used to mix strained prunes in with his porridge or with another fruit puree and made sure he had this daily.

avoid too much dairy especially eggs (we stopped giving egg all together for a while)
also avoid bananas, pasta, white bread and apple purees (although apple juice is fine)

I hope this helps. It's so horrible watching them strain for so long.

try dried apricots - have just put up a thread about them having the opposite effect on my kids (almost instant reaction).

MerlinsBeard · 09/08/2006 20:04

for some bizarre reason every nappy from late last night to this evening has had a poo in!! (small but its poo nonetheless!!) Seems like a cxombination of lactulose, dried fruit, and more "proper" fruit than you shake a bana tree at has worked for now.

TB, dried apricots not done it, was one of the first things i tried
