As if moving country weren't stressful enough, I was told on Friday morning that my smear test shows severe dyskariosis and I need to have more investigations/treatment as a matter of urgency. So thats great - I don't even know where the bloody supermarket is so finding a good doctor in the desert at top speed is gonna be a cinch.

How worried should I be? anyone else been through this?

where are you ? Can you contact the British Consulate locally for advice re doctors ?

meowmix · 07/08/2006 09:51

bloody Qatar. no actually its a great place. Consulate was hopeless, suggested I call "the hospital" but no number did they have. I'd rather not ask people in the office just yet as am the new boss and need to look all masterful and in control....

Good luck

Just wanted to give you some support hon - I had a similar thing when I moved to a job in Cyprus so I can really appreciate how you are feeling. Your employer (in UK or there) will surely have medical contact numbers. Like notasheep, I also ended up having an op so they could have a good mooch round - been clear ever since too. Be kind to yourself & try not to worry

Is there an ex-pat community group? They may be able to recommend a doctor Here in Greece there is a very active group for foreign women and they actually publish a book of advice and recomendations (including doctors) for new arrivals.

oh you poor thing. i had a positive smear that had early stage changes and had to have biopsy but have been all clear since. it is very very frightening, but very treatable. do you have any contact at all that might know a good doctor/hospital? i imagine the healthcare is very good in such a rich country, hope that is not a mistaken assumption on my part.

keep posting on here for support.

Meowmix, according to a friend who's been there, the hospital is called Hamad General hospital, and you should anyway register with your local primary Health Centre (if you know where you're living yet). There's a women's hospital next to Hamad. Hope this helps.

legophobe you are a superstar. Thank you so much.

There is an expatwomens group out here but its holiday season so hardly any (sane) people are here. No idea what the temp is outside but we have condensation running down the outside of the windows due to the humidity. As you may imagine I look stunning, not a sign of frizz or swear upon me. No. No, thats not right. That'd be someone else. Dammit.

Actually, I'm a diplomat, so felt a bit responsible for the Consul being unhelpful. And sympathise with the whole moving abroad and not knowing what to do thing. I just checked, and it specifically says on the website (www.britishembassy.gov.uk/Qatar) that providing info on doctors is a consular service, so perhaps you should call them back and point that out. It might be that you just got them at a bad moment - they obviously have to drop everything else when there's a death or big accident to deal with.
