how quick does an abscess stop hurting after taking antibiotics? it's been a while since I had one. dentist can't actually say what it is because I am up the duff and he can't x ray, but it didn't hurt this morning and hurts now - does that mean it's more likely to be that gum thing that i can't remember the name of?

also just wanted to say: ow.

so has no-one had an abscess lately? you lucky things.

still, it's something to take my mind off the heat.

I think it should start easing within about 24h of starting the antibiotics - but it's likewise a long time since I had such a problem.

Is the other thing you're thinking of gingivitis? That can feel like toothache too.

No real advice, sorry, just loads of sympathy.

Bummer having dental problems while pg - I certainly remember that well!

Antibiotics take at least 24(if not 48) hours to build up in your system and start reducing the bacteria and hence the infection/pain. All you can take is paracetamol and do lots of hot salt water rinses, wish I could offer more help.

thanks. hopefully will be better today then. Gingivitis was the other thing I was thinking of as I seem to get that in every pregnancy - I know it can hurt almost as much. I have a thing about unneccessary antibiotics you see. but the dentist is probably right.

Ask your dentist to prescribe a mouthwash for you. Mine did (not that I ever used it - I couldn't bear the taste while I had morning sickness, and never bothered to fill the prescription), but I can't remember what it was called, but she said that it was better for gingivitis and safer for pg women than any of the off-the-shelf ones.
