hi, new to all this so bear with me. My 15 year old ds, has just told me one of his testicles is swollen. I am a single mum and he is finding it hard to talk to me about it we are waiting for hospital appointment. Has anyone else had experience as i am very worried.

Sorry, no personal experience.
According to the stats in Lance Armstrong's autobiography your DS would be unusually young for testicular cancer (mostly 18-25yos), if that's any consolation. But I don't know if those stats are totally accurate. Nevertheless, would you have a chance to pay for an initial private consultation, just to fast-track your son into the system if it is the worst, or to put your mind at ease otherwise? Armstrong's book is very inspirational, if you did get the very worst news.

Can I just give you some very positive thoughts.

Obviously you and your son are worried about thia. Although it is unspoken, you are probably worried that it could be cancer.

It is very possible not cancer but even if it is, it is not a death sentence. Or even a major life changing issue.

Dh has cancer of the testicle 10 years ago. It wa treated with surgery and three shots of chemo. He wasn't ill, was never sick, and kept all his hair....diddn't have much to start with.

He is still fertile, we concieved both our children post treatment with no help or intervention needed. Our sex life is fine, and everything is in perfect working order !0 years down the line he is fine!

If you have to get a cancer, it has the best survival rates.

Try not to worry, it is probably nothing. But also remember that this form of cancer is very, very treatable.

If he's waiting for a hospital appointment, does that means he has already seen a GP?
If not, don't delay - call a doctor or go to the out of hours clinic.

A twisted testicle, called a "torsion", can result from a sporting activity or just an unusual twisting of the body, perhaps while sitting in a chair and reaching for something on the floor. There is plenty of info if you search google usine "torsion" and "testicle". It is important to seek medical advice immediately - delayed hours can be critical.

If a doctor has already seen the problem and you are just waiting for a hospital appointment then I wouldn't be over-concerned. Torsions are not unusual and a doctor will recognise it immediately. If the GP has decided it's not an emergency, then it's not.

I presume the swelling didn't just appear today in which case should be seen in A&E NOW; as KS mentioned could be twisted testicle.
If not most likely to be something like a hydrocoele=watersack (not really serious). If you are waiting for hospital appointment, I presume GP must have seen it and should be able to give an idea about what it is???

get them to check out testicular torsion if there is any pain - it should be done quickly - and beware not all gps are aware of this condition.

My Dh had this mid teens and ended up losing a testicle - however it did not compromise fertility as we now have 3 kids.

His parents had never heard of it and were quite slow to get it checked out.
